Chapter Nine

Maggie swore all the blood drained out of her body to leave only an open-mouthed Maggie Fenton shell in her seat. Serious damage control was needed before the fireworks began. If only she could think of something to rebuff what Jonah was saying. Why was he doing this to her? If it was punishment for running out on him, it was beyond any cruelty Peter had ever inflicted on her. Humiliation topped on certain eviction was the ultimate payback.

“We’re friends.” She looked Peter in the eye, and had to look away again. This wasn’t the time or the place to discuss the details of her relationship with Jonah. Especially when she was so confused about the whole situation herself.

Jonah scraped his chair back to stand up, the screech across the wooden floor making Maggie jump. She was on tenterhooks—her whole future balanced on what he would do next.

“Oh, we’re much more than that, Maggie. I think it’s about time good ol’ Peter knew the score.”

“Does someone mind telling me what the fuck is going on?” Peter slammed a fist on the table, rattling the dishes along with Maggie’s nerves. He leaned over her, spit gathering at the corners of his mouth.

Maggie stared at her lap.

“Obviously, there’s some misunderstanding. This must be one of Jonah’s pranks.” Mrs Hamilton threw herself into denial.

Maggie desperately wanted to join her.

“Jonah?” His father waited for confirmation.

“I don’t find your sense of humor amusing, young man. I think it’s time you left.” Peter tried to take back control of the evening without losing face.

“Let me spell it out for you, old man. Maggie and I are together.” Jonah scored one against Peter.

It seemed to Maggie her reputation was collateral damage in the power struggle.

“Don’t be ridiculous.” Jonah’s mother couldn’t contain her disgust.

Her outburst didn’t come as a shock to Maggie since they were probably in the same age bracket.

The implication of what Maggie had done began to sink in. After all, her husband’s actions with a younger woman had had the same effect on her upchuck reflexes.

“It’s true.” Jonah’s fiery stance died down to quiet resignation. She’d left him to fight alone. The plea for her to stand with him was there in his sigh.

He was so handsome, so strong, so passionate, and he wanted to be with her. She saw her salvation reflected in his deep brown eyes. They were in this together. For once in her life she needed to find her backbone and do what was best for her. A moment of happiness with Jonah was preferable to the lifetime of misery she faced with Peter.

“Yes, it’s true. Jonah and I have been seeing each other for a while.” Unable to believe her confession, her words were barely a whisper. She got to her feet and cleared her throat. “We’re together.”

It was a rallying cry that enabled her to break free from her shackles, and stand beside the man she loved. “I love Jonah. I’m sorry if that upsets your plans, Peter, but tough shit.
