CHAPTER SEVEN

SHE was stunning, sitting astride Ghazi, bareback. He’d been watching her gentle the horse for two days now. Hadn’t said a word to her, hadn’t even gone close. His excuse was that he didn’t want to spook the horse and everything seemed to spook that horse, except Julie. In truth, though, he didn’t want to spook Julie.

Damn, he shouldn’t have kissed her. Should have left well enough alone, especially since they’d come to an understanding. But the urge…well, he’d hoped it would be quelled. It wasn’t, though. Didn’t even come close to it. In fact, one kiss had whetted his appetite. He wanted more. But he knew the result of that, didn’t he? Which made the acid churn bitterly in his stomach. One more screwup to add to his collection.

“She’s making progress,” Rafe said, sitting down next to Jess on the front porch. “Johnny wasn’t sure that one was going to turn out good. Too abused. But Julie has her way with horses, doesn’t she? Probably one of the best horsewomen I’ve ever seen.”

In answer, Jess shifted positions on the swing, then shifted his gaze to focus on a little chickadee hopping its way through the grass. But I’ve been wondering if it’s time to go beyond that structure and do something worthwhile for the whole area, considering that we’ve got the space, as well as the resources.”

“Didn’t think you wanted to get that involved in the hospital again.”

“I don’t…didn’t. But right now there’s nothing else to do. Can’t go back to work. Can’t even walk around without injuring myself. And if I spend another day staring at the walls—” or Julie “—I’ll go crazy. So I might as well do something useful.” Something with Julie.

Rafe chuckled. “So, as a last resort, you’re going to play at being a hospital owner? Which is fine with me, actually, because I could use some help.”

“Well, don’t go thinking I’ll be returning to medical practice, because I won’t. But I want to take a stab at seeing how we can manage more for Lilly Lake. There’s a need. A big need. And before you tell me that’s what you’ve been trying to get me to do for months, I know that. I should have listened to you. But I didn’t, and I can’t change it.”

“Better late than never. And so you’ll know, I’m not going to kick you in the butt over it, since I didn’t exactly want to take up the cause either.”

“But you got lucky and ended up with a good life here,” Jess said, almost on a wistful sigh. “How is Edie doing this morning? She seemed a little tired at breakfast.”

“I think she’s anxious to get this pregnancy over with. I mean, I
