My tail once again swished through the salty waters of the Under as Kai, Caspian, and I made our way to the ship. Kai looked happy to be a Mer again while Caspian had his war face on. It was one that I’d only seen a handful of times, but was very close to the face he made at me when I said something he thought particularly dumb as shit. His skin, as soon as he hit the warm saline water, became that pallid grey that I’d once rejected. Now it seemed just another part of him, and I found myself not disgusted at all. I may go as far as to say I kinda like it.

Not that I’d ever tell him that.

He caught me looking at him and waggled his eyebrows. “I hope your brother could stop humping Pearl long enough to get his army congregated.” I ignored him, not willing to entertain the idea that my brother had failed us. “It’s really the only part he has to play in saving this kingdom. He’s not the one with the badass firepower.”

The Siren wasn’t wrong. Our plan to end the would-be tyrannical reign of Raven was betting on half assed planning, positive thoughts and chance encounters, but for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out another way. I just hoped the seas were on our side today. “I hope Raven took the bait. We need her to come down here. A fight in the Above would end with me beached.” I took a long gulp of the sea and let it calm me.

“It’s going to be fine. Raven’s had enough time to get her shit straight and probably tell Garrison what is going on, but there hasn’t been much time for anything else. She’ll be here. She has to be. I saw her face when I challenged her. There is nothing she wants more in the world right now than to kill me. And that’s what she thinks she’s coming down here to do.”

“Unless she took the time to recharge or somehow rejuvenate herself. How the fuck do you slimy things recharge, Caspian?” Kai asked, shuddering as he did, but trying to hide it.

“I don’t know. They just do. I’m not a dark powers scholar or anything. But then again, I can’t use them on land like she can, so there’s no telling what the ins and outs of her powers are at this point.”

“We’re almost there. The ship is beyond that current. Everyone put their battle faces on. We’re about to see how well this plan is going to work,” Kai pointed ahead to a swirl of current that almost dissipated at his command and revealed the ship. My heart thrummed overtime in my chest while my stomach knotted up and my brain went into overdrive, thinking about all of the potential catastrophic outcomes.

We swam to the ship while I tried to mentally sustain myself with courage. Around the corner, the three of us made a line for the entrance when we were stopped by Raven in all her glory.
