Chapter Eight
Jaden
It had been a month since I went out with Benjamin to the Line and Dine. We hadn’t seen each other in person since that day. However, ever since the night that he had called me instead of Emily, we spoke regularly throughout our days via text messages and we had a phone call at least three times a week after I was done at work.
Somehow, Benjamin had become the one that I called at the end of the day to tell him all about it. And I had become that person for him. We messaged each other on a regular basis. Just that morning he had sent me a photo of his most recent drawing: a cat curled up on the windowsill of a tall building, hidden by the foliage of the plants of whatever old lady lived there.
The best part was that somewhere along the way, Emily had slowly started to fade all but completely from our conversations. The first few had been almost entirely about her, about the ways that we struggled through our day without her, about how we missed her, about the way we had met. I knew their whole story as well as Benjamin knew ours. As weird as it might seem, neither of us seemed to mind talking about the shared relationship that we had. There was no jealousy or animosity to it.
For a while, I had been building up the confidence to finally do it. It had been a long time coming. That night, I decided to ask him if he wanted to hang out in person again.
I didn’t mind the way that we spoke constantly over the phone but Benjamin was becoming one of my best friends and I was growing tired of not being able to see him when I made him laugh. Okay, maybe that was a bit of an understatement. I was kind of beginning to crave Benjamin’s presence.
I wanted to see the brush strokes of his paintings in person. More importantly, I was excited to be able to have fun with him the same way that we had when we had gone line dancing without Emily looming over our heads. I wanted to see where things could actually go with him.
He made me happier in the last few months than I had been since Emily had left – perhaps since before then if I was honest with myself. It scared me, sure, but I was trying to make a conscious effort to be more like the Benjamin that I had gone to the Line and Dine with. That guy was fearless when it came to taking the leap for something he wanted.
I only hoped that he might feel that way about me.
The awkwardness had disappeared and I was more comfortable with Benjamin than I was with anyone else. In fact, I trusted him more than I trusted Emily. With Emily, there had always been an undercurrent of fear. I was afraid that if I were myself, I might lose her.
