CHAPTER 14

THE DODGE JERKED FORWARD, and Frank thought he’d been rear-ended until he heard the explosion—a boom so powerful that it shook the buildings along Lexington Avenue.

“Daddy?” Samantha asked, clutching his arm. “What is it? Did a plane crash?”

“Jesus.”

“Daddy . . . is it a plane crash?”

“No, no honey, it’s not a plane. It sounded like a bomb, a big one. But it’s a long way from here, so don’t worry,” Frank said, flooring the gas pedal and screeching down the street.

He sped through traffic like the truck had a force field he was sure other vehicles couldn’t penetrate, cutting off two taxis and a dump truck to get into the buses-only lane.

It was a risky move. Driving in the restricted lane increased his chances of being pulled over, but he had no choice. He had to get to the tunnel before the cops he’d knocked out at the mosque came to and reported him.

If they ever come to, Frank thought. I hit them both so hard that I probably killed them . . . but don’t think about that. Focus, Frank, focus. He pounded his fist against the steering wheel when the bus he was following stopped to pick up a long line of passengers.

Frank looked over at Samantha. Her eyes were closed, and sweat dripped from her forehead. Her face was ashen and her lips were trembling. He brushed his fingers across her arm, felt the coldness of her skin, and panicked.

“Sammy? Sammy?” He shook her roughly. “Wake up honey! Please wake up!”

“I am awake, Franklin.”

“How you feelin’?”

“About you beating up two policemen? Not good.”

“Well, no, not that. I mean, how are you feeling feeling? You’re sweating, but you’re cold. Your lips were trembling.”

“I feel a little sick, but I think it’s because of your driving. I’ll be okay when we’re home.”

“We’ll be home soon.”

“And my lips weren’t trembling; I was praying.”

“Jesus, honey, you just finished praying at the mosque.”

“Yeah, well, that was before you hit those guys. That’ll take lots of praying to square with You-Know-Who.”

“Sammy, you know I don’t believe in hurting people.”

“You’ve got a funny way of showing it.”

Frank pressed down on the truck’s horn and held it for a good thirty seconds. Move it, move it, move it. The bus driver stuck a hand out his window and pointed his middle finger upward at Frank.

“Damn it, Sammy! Those guys were assholes. I mean really bad guys! They would’ve taken you away and stuck you in a foster home. Just because they’ve got badges, Sam, doesn’t mean . . . look, they’re exactly like the ignorant jarheads who killed your mom for being a Muslim and—”

“I heard what they said. I know what they think. I know you’re scared for me. But you shouldn’t have hit them.”

“Sammy, you’ve memorized the friggin’ Bible, right? What about ‘an eye for an eye’?”

Samantha sighed. “Exodus 21:23 . . . life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth . . . that sort of thing?”

Frank nodded, “Yeah, exactly. See?”

“No one poked out your eye, Frank.
