So it’s left to Ace to wink at the nurses and rodeo groupies, make wisecracks, deliver homespun philosophy, and wax lyrical about his dream of Australia. The destruction of the hospital television is pretty much a statement of intent. Shortly afterwards, he discharges himself, much to the chagrin of Nurse Arlis, his carer and occasional consort. He plants a kiss on her lips even as she berates him, then heads off down the corridor. Her response is to summon the orderlies. As they converge on him, he hijacks a janitor’s cart. He puts the mop to good use, wielding it like a javelin. ‘I don’t fight fair, boys,’ he warns, grinning. They take him at his word. ‘Adios, sweet angel of mercy,’ he adds, hastening outside to flag down a cab. ‘Where to?’ the driver asks. ‘To the rodeo, partner,’ he answers. ‘Where else?’
This is Ace in his element, acting the goat and loving every minute of it. When Curly mentions putting his father on a weekly allowance, it says as much about Ace as it does Curly. The father-son relationships in Junior Bonner are inverted. It is the father who should give an allowance (or pocket money) to his son during childhood, not vice versa and with both parties of mature age. It is the father whose priority should be to earn a living, who should be pragmatic and worldly-wise. Here it is Curly who represents work and responsibility, while Junior speaks with the voice of experience.
