I’m out the door, with Ben at my side, at two minutes after nine. We won’t be more than a few minutes late to pick up Will. But just as I’m getting into the Audi, an unfamiliar car turns into our driveway. The driver, however, is very familiar.

I run over to it and throw myself at my best friend just as she steps out of what must be her rental car. “Beth! What—why—how did you get here?”

She coughs weakly, and I pull back, give her some space to breathe. “If I knew you were going to try and strangle me the moment you saw me, I would have stayed home!” What did she expect? It’s been four months since I’ve seen her in person—she came out to visit for my birthday last October. Of course I’m excited to see her. For some reason, my son isn’t nearly as excited as I am—but then I see why. He’s running around to the passenger side to open the door and let Little Sara out of the back seat.

She looks exactly like her mother; it’s almost uncanny. I wonder if she’ll end up being even taller than Beth when she grows up; she’s already very tall for her age. She’s got at least two inches on Matty, and they were born just a week apart. “I’m sorry,” I tell Beth, laughing. “I was just so surprised, and—well, you know what’s been going on.” The smile drops off my face, and hers. “That’s not why—you didn’t come just because you were worried about me, did you?”

She forces a grin. “You get into more trouble than anybody else I’ve ever met. Of course I’m worried about you.” I don’t answer her, because she’s right. “But it just worked out. I was in Washington for a conference, and when we got to the airport this morning to fly home, I saw there were direct flights into Westchester County Airport. So I changed our ticket, and here we are.” She looks me up and down; I guess she’s just now realizing that I was getting ready to leave. “But you’re going somewhere. I’ll take Little Sara inside, and we can talk when you get back, unless it’s something that’s going to take all day.”

I shake my head. “No. Just an errand. I have to go pick up one of our cadets.” There’s plenty of room in the car; no reason Beth can’t come with me. I call over to my son. “Hey, Peanut, do you want to stay here and spend some time with Little Sara, and Aunt Beth can go with me to West Point?” He has to consider that for a moment. Even though our first-year cadet, Allison, won’t be coming back with us today, she might be waiting with Will, and Ben would be passing up a chance to see her for five or ten minutes. On the other hand, Little Sara is basically family, and he loves her as much as he does any of his actual cousins.
