“Tell me what you do for Ra,” I said, wiping my sweaty palms against my thighs. We’d been sitting, drinking coffee for twenty minutes, discussing the movie that I hadn’t watched, and I wanted to use this time to get to know more about this enigma of a man.

He sat back and I watched a wall build up around him, shadowing in his face and causing purplish bruise-like marks to appear under his eyes. It was as if he’d time-traveled to a boxing match, lost, then reappeared in front of me. I was stunned.

His hand flew up and scratched the back of his neck, a gesture I hadn’t seen at all that night. His eyes didn’t meet mine when he answered, “Oh, well. There really isn’t much to say. I, uh. I clean up for him. You know. Make sure he has what he needs.” As soon as the words were out, he was up from his seat, wallet in hand, thanking me for the coffee. It was so abrupt; I wasn’t sure what to think.

Standing, I said, “Hey, Simon. I’m sorry if I said something wrong. I was just trying to get to know you better. This,” I gestured between us with my hand, “was not my intent. Please, I really am sorry.”

I watched his eyes meet mine, then alternate between the two. Taking his lower lip into his mouth, he spoke so quietly I had to lean in to make out the words. “I’m sorry, too. I overreacted.”

Speechless, I stood in place beside the booth, listening to the sounds of the staff cleaning out the coffee machines and washing dishes in the back. When I saw Simon reclaim his side of the booth, I realized my hands were clenched so hard into fists I had crescent marks on my palms. This was me in over my head. Here I was, almost thirty years old and I’d never experienced being this close to another person. Being close enough that I physically hurt to think they were going to walk out on me.

Closing my eyes, I sank down into the cushioned booth as the waitress made her way over to our table. “Anything I can get you boys?” she asked, looking a bit confused.

“No, thank you. I think we’re pretty much done, just saying goodnight.” Simon gave the woman a grin that could make a wolf choke on its tongue, then looked at me as she made her way back to the kitchen.

“I’m sorry if I’ve made this totally weird. I’m not used to talking to other people about anything, let alone my own personal information.”

I leaned across the table, my palms flat against the linoleum surface. “I get it. I’m sorry if it felt like pushing. I just wanted to know more about you. I didn’t mean to cross a line.”

A wave of red crawled up his neck and tipped his ears. He looked away, then down at his lap. Finally, he said, “You didn’t cross a line. I removed the tape well before that could happen.
