Chapter 25
Sloane flung open the door to the private room. A disastrously decorated room met our eyes. A few overly ornate tables were scattered around the room haphazardly, surrounded by stylish torture devices posing as chairs. Kitschy art hung at odd angles on the walls. I glimpsed one piece that looked like Botticelliâs Birth of Venus, but instead of the titular goddess perched on a giant seashell, there was an obese tabby cat with the biggest set of balls Iâd ever seen on a feline.
A bar covered in garish mosaic tiles nestled in the corner. From the brief glance I allowed myself, it looked well stocked with the good stuff. At least there was one person in this whole place who had taste that ranked somewhere higher than âtackyâ. Thank goodness for good bartenders.
Unfortunately, it didnât look like the person whoâd stocked the bar had any influence on the rest of the vampire lair. A few vamps lounged around the room. All of them demonstrated tragic fashion choices in every element of their appearance between the flashy clothes, the trendy-to-the-point-of-vomit hair, and the shoes designed for sitting. Where Alessandro had oozed old-world charm and sophistication, this crowd looked like they couldnât find the definition of those words with a computer and only one functioning website set to an online dictionary.
A handful of vampires leapt to their feet as the hallway door banged open. My eyes immediately latched on to the single vamp who didnât move. He sat in a throne-like chair behind a large, gilded desk at the back of the room, sipping his bloodwine sanctimoniously.
The two vamps that lounged in the chairs across from him sprang to attack formation in front of their leader with their fangs bared. One was a tall, lean female wearing a matching bedazzled velvet track suit in a nauseating shade of lime green, complete with a rhinestone-studded velvet ball cap. The male was short and stocky. He looked utterly ridiculous while he crouched defensively in his burgundy ruffled shirt and oversized zoot suit in baby blue pinstripes. When they saw us, two fairly unassuming women stumbling into their lair, they both smiled and moved aside.
The enthroned blond vampire dressed like a crooning boy band member from the late 90s. He was handsome in a pale, cool sort of way. His contacts flashed a brilliant blue over his mostly milky red eyes, giving an unusual purple hue to his eyes. He wore an oversized cream turtleneck under a long, shiny blue jacket. He completed the look with a thick gold chain.
Good Lord, heâd even frosted the tips of his gelled hair spikes.
I looked around wildly for his stool, fedora, and a handheld mic. Undoubtedly, he was about to croon a love song, only to stand at the dramatic key change. Sadly, I was disappointed. No vampiric boy band harmonized upon our entrance.
I maintained my drunken pretense as we waded deeper into the room of vamps. The bartender we had first propositioned zipped around us to whisper in his bossâs ear.
