Sawyer parked the Mini in a lay-by off the lane that wound past the Kendal house. The surrounding woodland glittered in low afternoon sun, and Sawyer flipped down his windscreen eye shield. They sat there for a while, windows open, listening.

Drowsy birdsong from the trees above. Distant bleating.

Sawyer took a pair of mini binoculars from the glovebox. He held out a packet of boiled sweets; Luka shook his head.

He leaned out of the window and surveyed the cottage, a light rain spritzing his face.

‘You haven’t even asked me if this is the right place,’ said Luka.

‘It is, though, isn’t it?’ He lowered the binoculars and sat back in his seat.

‘Yeah. You got the address from someone on the phone. I’m not stupid.’

‘I know.’

Luka leaned over, opened the glovebox. ‘You’ve got loads of sweets in here. I can’t believe you’ve got Jolly Ranchers. They’re horrible. American sweets are rank. Their chocolate tastes like sick.’

‘That’s because they use a type of acid.’

‘Yeah. Hershey’s.’ Luka prodded a finger into his open mouth. ‘Smells like sweaty feet and tastes like sick.’

‘You should suggest that as a new advertising tagline.’

Luka closed the glovebox. ‘Who lives here, anyway?’

‘A woman called Victoria Kendal. She used to write to Dennis Crawley when he was in prison. He might have used it to hide out.’

Luka scoffed. ‘Well, he’s not there now.’

‘The men who were here. What were they doing?’

‘Dunno. They came in after me. I don’t think they saw me get in. One of them said he saw my phone light.’

‘He spoke English?’

‘To me, yeah. But not to each other. Sounded like Indian or Arabic or something.’

Sawyer closed the windows. ‘I need to look around.’

Luka took his backpack from the back seat. ‘I’m not staying in the car.’

‘I know.’
