Chapter Fifteen
Jon
The haze of waking up hadnât faded by the time I poured myself another cup of coffee. Jay didnât seem to be faring much better, slumped low in the kitchen chair while he rolled his head from side to side. None of us had gotten much rest.
Water continued to run in the bathroom, the whir of it rushing through the pipes in the thin walls telling anyone who could hear that someone was in the shower. And with Len gone, me and Jay had a couple minutes to talk.
âGlad you came around, man,â I said, dumping a massive spoonful of sugar into my coffee and struggling to keep from singing that fucking Poppins song.
He didnât say anything, and a glance told me why. He was squirming in his skin. Even though none of it had made it to the surface, I knew the guy well enough to spot it with ease.
âAnd by the way,â I said, turning to lean against the counter and face him. Jay apprehensively peered up at me from beneath his eyebrows. âBecause I know she wonât say shit, Iâm gonna let you know that you need to rein your girl in.â
His brow furrowed with mild confusion.
âThe stripper,â I said. Jay bristled. âShe tracked Len down at the hardware store yesterday. Got in her face.â
Worry flashed in the manâs eyes. He sat a little straighter than before, rolling a single shoulder in the process.
âWhat happened?â he asked, no doubt afraid something violent had transpired. I didnât blame him. Iâd thought the same thing.
âFrom what I heard, it went well enough, I guess, but you might wanna deal with her before things get out of hand.â
Jay sighed, chewing on the inside of his cheek while he stared at the tabletop.
âShouldâve dealt with her a while back.â He sucked on his teeth. âI donât even like spending time with her, but that didnât stop me.â
I didnât bother asking why. I was well aware that the man needed someone in his life. It was a commitment thing. Jay had been so starved for affection and lost when Len left that he clung to someone, anyone, and it didnât matter that it was the stripper.
The problem was having that with someone like Cinnamon, someone who was clearly marking her territory the way she was, had the potential of being really dangerous.
âShe needs to go,â I said, hoping to make it sound as kind as possible so he didnât erupt. âIf sheâs acting like this, shit isnât gonna end well.â
He sighed again. âI donât need a lecture.â
I bit down on the urge to be an asshole and had to remind myself that he wasnât being a dick on purpose.
âIâm not lecturing you, man. Iâm looking out for you. Youâre my brother.â
âI know,â he muttered.
âWhatâre you going to do about her?â
âEnd it. I already told you.â
I shook my head. âNot about the stripper.â Jay looked up. âAbout her.â I jerked my head to the side, indicating the only woman who really mattered in the conversation.
