Dane cringed viewing the cow corpse. Whatever had attacked it, had ripped it to shreds. He’d received a call from Jett about an attack that wasn’t normal. They had canvased the farm and hadn’t seen anything out of the ordinary. Whatever had snuck onto the property had made a nice meal of the cow, leaving a mess in their wake.

It was growing late, and neither of them had been able to get a hold of Tank. He was probably in his bear form.

“I just spoke with Nash, and he’ll look into this, but he doubts his wolves would have attacked a cow,” Dane announced, sliding his phone back into his pocket. A yawn escaped him. He was dead-ass tired, and his bed was calling him.

“I’m not even asking Grant. If a tiger would have come onto their lands, they would have heard it.” Jett scratched his head, glancing down at the carcass. He blew out a deep breath and looked around. “We might as well call it a night. Not much else for us to search for in the dark.”

“Chuck said once we’re done, he and his sons will handle the carcass,” Dane said, releasing another yawn.

“Well, we’re done here.”

Dane followed Jett back to the main house of the Simpson homestead. The door to the house swung open, and Chuck stepped out onto the porch with his sons, Mitch and Seth, following behind him.

“Anything, Sheriff?” Chuck called out.

“Nothing much that we can see tonight,” Jett replied.

They stopped at the bottom of the stairs.

“Well, whatever it is, better not come back around. I have a shotgun and I’m not afraid to use it.” Chuck was an older human.

“And as you should. You have the right to protect your property,” Dane said. Humans were more vulnerable than shifters.

“We’ll have someone swing through the next few nights when we are patrolling. We’ve enlisted the help of the wolf and tiger packs. They are lending men to help protect everyone,” Jett announced.

“We appreciate everything you are doing, Sheriff,” Mitch said. He and his brother moved closer to their father. “It makes us feel safer knowing you are already making moves to make sure Blackclaw remains safe.”

“No problem. You folks have a good night.” Jett tipped his hat to them.

They turned and headed toward their vehicles.

“Where the hell is Tank?” Dane muttered. He took his hat off and wearily ran a hand through his hair before replacing it.

“Not sure. He’s been off the grid for a few hours. He met with the wolves and tigers. I haven’t heard from him since,” Jett replied.

Dane shook his head and arrived at his SUV. “I’ll see you at home. I’m drained.”

He slid into his truck and started it. The truck roared to life. If another call came through, Tank was dealing with it.

All he needed was a good night’s sleep, and in the morning, he planned to drop in and check out Keeva’s new place. Coral had texted him, letting him know that they had got her settled.

She wouldn’t need to have much brought to that home.
