The sun streaming through the windows woke me with a start. For a second, I was confused as to where I was and then it hit me, and I immediately panicked. What time was it? 8:14. I swore repeatedly in my head. I quickly glanced over at her. She was still fast asleep. Could I sneak out?

I quietly looked into the hallway: nothing. As I made it to the stairway, I smelled coffee. Someone was already up. Back straight against the wall, I went halfway down the stairs. I heard the voices of two people talking. Her parents. Noises. Cupboards opening and shutting, faucet on the sink running, dishes rattling. Something sizzling. Breakfast.

I went down the rest of the way and cautiously peered out. Nobody in the living room. They were distracted by making a big Saturday breakfast to celebrate their little girl being home. I looked towards the door. It was closed shut. I had to risk the noise. I darted towards it, the soft carpet of the living room muting any noise, and as quietly as I could opened the door, shimmied through the narrowest opening I could afford, and gently shut it behind me.

I ran toward my car, sweating profusely. It was the combination of the cold air hitting my sweat drenched body that made me realize that I had left my coat in the dining room when I let myself in last night. There was nothing I could do about it, to go back would be like ringing the doorbell and introducing myself. My one hope was that their son left his clothes laying around enough times that they wouldn’t even notice.

The “spending the night and leaving my coat there” debacle almost made me think about cancelling the next part of my plan. But in the long run, the thought of the handsome, charming monster towering over her, defiling her with a sadistic grin was more than I could bear.

The next day I put the first part of my plan in action. I stayed late at the DMV, claiming a system malfunction from earlier kept me from completing my work load. It worked and I was the only in the building besides one maintenance employee, dutifully dealing with a toilet clogged by a failed road test exam sheet and a driver’s handbook liberally coated in urine. I hate kids.

When I was sure that the place was deserted, I took my own picture, and processed my own ID. Driver’s license forms and blank cards were carefully monitored and counted against inventory, to make sure that nobody was giving away free driver’s licenses.

Non driver ID forms weren’t so much because while driver’s licenses were white and had a holographic image in the corner, non-driver’s IDs only were more of a tan color and had no holographic image. It would work for what I needed. I put in a fake name, using an anagram of Matt Damon, fake birthdate and address and signed it using my new alias.

The next day, I opened up a post office box with it at a post office on the other side of town.
