Chapter Eleven

Saylor

Cole fled faster than I ever even thought possible when he dropped me off at my suite. This back and forth with him…it started off as confusing, and now I don’t even know what to call it. Heart ping-pong might come pretty damn close, though.

I know he wants me like I want him. I know he has some things at risk here. But I can’t get over the way he looked like he’d literally seen a ghost when he hightailed it back down the hallway. And that whole thing about knowing he might push me away again and being ready to deal with the consequences when it happened?

Total bullshit.

I wasn’t prepared for it, and I realized it the second he left me standing in the hallway alone.

And I haven’t heard from him since.

So, I do what I always do when I’m stressed and need to take my mind off things.

I dance.

The ballet studio down at the gym is empty when I peek inside on my way to the locker room. According to the schedule the receptionist gave me the first day I was here, it should stay that way for a few hours. More than enough time for me to lose myself and forget the ache in my chest.

I set my phone down in front of the wall of mirrors, letting my warm-up music play through the speakers as I stretch and mentally running through my practice routine before I put it into action, counting the beats I need to hit.

Once my muscles feel fluid and loose, I switch to my showcase song.

I’ve spent most of the last six months choreographing every step and adding in a move here and there when it suddenly feels right. The last few practices have been rather steady, and I think it’s finally perfect.

When I’ve run through it a few times for the camera, I send it off to my instructor. My thoughts are still a little muddled despite the last hour, so I set it to play through a different playlist. The music is upbeat, rhythmic, and tells you exactly how to move if you just listen close enough.

I dance and dance, rolling my hips and dragging my hands down my body. My mind goes to that heavenly space of blank with another part of me taking over, the part that only feels the song.

That is, until I open my eyes and catch a glimpse of a tall shadow in the doorway.

Cole.

My heart beats faster just at the sight of him, and I stop dancing. His lips turn up, and I give him a small smile. He doesn’t have the panicked look to him now, more at ease like when we were at his house.

“Hi,” I say softly when he steps farther into the room.

“Hey, baby.” He closes the door behind him and crosses the room to me, and I practically melt when he slides his arms around me, pulling me against his chest. “I missed you.”

“You ran away,” I say, pressing my cheek into his polo and breathing him in.
