CHAPTER EIGHT

Margaret and Deidre worked through much of the morning and afternoon. The kids had tromped in for bathroom breaks around lunchtime, and then Nick had driven them to Sita’s home for lunch. He was remaining conspicuously in the background, offering help and then disappearing once he gave it.

Working with Margaret was a welcome relief from all the headaches of the past couple of weeks. Margaret was a good person, earnest and humble, and would shy away from talking about herself if given the chance. But whenever Deidre asked about the book or the research behind it, Margaret couldn’t stop talking she was so enthusiastic.

“Okay, so the thing to do is to redirect any interview questions back to the book,” Deidre counseled. Margaret was sitting up straight in an armchair with Deidre seated next to her. Nick had said there would be a similar living room arrangement on set. “While people want to know everything about you, they’ll be enthralled just to hear you speak. The power rests with you, Margaret. Not the interviewer, okay?”

Margaret took a deep breath. “Okay.”

“You’re going to do great,” Deidre assured her. “If you remember even a little bit of what we covered, you’ll be fine. I’m not worried at all. I know you’ll do well.”

“Really?” Margaret sounded doubtful, but she smiled shyly.

“Yes,” Deidre said firmly. “And try to have fun, Margaret. You’ve touched lives with your book, and people want to understand that connection. Let them in. Let them be a part of it.”

“I like that,” Margaret said. “I like that it’s about the book and not me.” She stood up and made to give Deidre a hug but then seemed embarrassed. “Thank you, Deidre.”

Deidre put her arms around Margaret and hugged her firmly. “You’re welcome.”

Margaret pinked at Deidre’s touch but didn’t pull away. “I don’t feel ready to go back to the city yet,” she confessed to Deidre and Nick.

Nick jangled his car keys. “Big day tomorrow. You should get some rest.”

“I know,” Margaret said. “But I won’t. I’ll be lying in my bed, anxious and festering. I probably won’t sleep a wink. We could take a short walk around the lake.” She turned to Deidre. “Didn’t you used to work some place around here?”

“The Wishbone,” Deidre said. “My friend Lindsey owns it. Best meatloaf in the Pacific Northwest.”

“Oh, can we go?” Margaret begged. She turned to Nick. “We’ll walk and I’ll have a good meal and then I’ll probably fall asleep on the way home. You can just roll me into my bed after that. Otherwise I might have to take an Ambien.”

“Nooo,” Nick said. He turned to Deidre. “Margaret and Ambien don’t mix. It works a little too well. She’s zonked for days.” He checked his watch. “It might not be such a bad idea, actually. Deidre, join us for dinner?”

“Please?” Margaret said.

“Please?” Nick grinned.

Deidre thought about this. Claire had begged to go to a homeschool class after lunch with Daisy, and Deidre had said yes.
