CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Logan sat back down at the long conference table. The file contents were strewn about like a train wreck. Logan let out a big sigh as he ran his hand through his already-disheveled hair. He picked up pieces of the file closest to him and started putting them back into the empty bankers boxes. He then picked up the manila file folder containing the photos of the truck.
There were several photos of the tractor lying on its side smoking as well as many photos of the trailer itself, also on its side. The trailer looked as if it almost collapsed and was severely misshapen. Logan picked up those photos examining them long and hard. He tapped a pencil on the glass tabletop as he looked at this watch. It was 8:30 p.m.
Logan went back to the computer desk and dialed the phone.
âUnited-American Van Lines,â came the voice on the other end of the phone.
âYeah. Hello, is Jimmy there?â Logan asked.
âSpeakinâ,â came the voice again.
âJimmy, itâs Logan Battle.â
âLogan, my boy, how you doinâ?â
âFine, fine. It looks like youâre always working as well.â
âYep. This is not just a job, itâs an adventure,â Jimmy chuckled on the other end of the line.
âYeah, it sounds like it. Hey, Jimmy, can you tell me what happened to the truck involved in the accident?â
âWell, it was pretty badly beat up, as you can imagine.â
âYeah, I understand, I was just looking at the pictures here. But where is the truck now?â
âThe tractor was sold at auction to a dealer in Jacksonville. Theyâve probably rebuilt it and sold the dadgum thing.â
âOK, what about the trailer?â
âOh, well, thatâs easy. Itâs sittinâ right here in the back of the yard against the fence.â
âReally?â
âYep.â
âWould you mind if I came down and looked at it?â
âNo problemo, kid. When do you want to do it?â
âHow about now?â
âNow?â Jimmy laughed. âHell, the yardâs yours, kid. Come on down. I hope their payinâ you a lot of money for the hours you keep.â
âSomeday, Jimmy, someday I hope. Iâll be down in a little bit.â
âSee ya then.â
Logan hung up the phone and then dialed Yellow Cab to pick him up downstairs in the front of the building. He quickly gathered some papers into his knapsack, including his yellow pad, and headed for the elevator.
Logan stepped into the balmy Florida evening. Downtown was, once again, a ghost town. A hot breeze blew the dayâs trash like a race down the streets. Logan dropped his knapsack to the ground as he sank into the city bench in front of the building. He wondered how a downtown, with buildings so tall, so massive could be so quiet and peaceful. He looked up at the skyscrapers, not many of them, but they were big. Different lights illuminated windows in a haphazard pattern high up in the sky. Logan leaned his head way back, his arms outstretched on the back of the bench. He looked up into the sky, past the top of the buildings to the twinkling stars far above.
