sobs finally began to subside and the grief washed over him one final
time, for now.
Milo pulled back a little and laughed as Scott held the
handkerchief in his field of vision.
“Thank you. Again.” He blew his nose and wiped his eyes with a
clean corner before taking in a deep breath and pulling back the rest of
the way into his own seat.
“You’re welcome. Ready?” Scott smiled, waited for Milo to nod,
then steered back into the slow traffic.
Scott was right. Having a little breakdown in a safe place where it
didn’t affect his mother or sister was just what he had needed. Milo
knew he’d be able to take whatever came next. He’d hold his own as
the man of the family and he’d be strong.
He turned his head to look at Scott who was driving as though
nothing special had happened at all. He wondered when the slender
man had become the one person whose absence from Milo’s daily life
always made an impact. In some ways, Scott was a necessity.
“What?” Scott looked at him quickly before turning his attention
to the road again.
“Next weekend, would you and the kids come to my house on
Saturday?” Milo asked before he could chicken out.
“I, uh….” Scott blinked a few times.
“My mother will want to spend time with her boyfriend. Cora
won’t be there. Unless something happens at the club on Thursday that
leads you to decide against it, you and the kids are more than welcome
to my place. I’ll probably ask a friend and his fiancée to come over
too.” Milo added the last bit quickly, reminding himself to call Aaron.
“We’re still going to the club?” Scott quickly looked at him with
a surprised expression.
“Look, Cora has been sick for as long as I can remember. We’ve
done this, almost this, a few times already. This time there won’t be
miracles. My sister will be gone, but she’d hate to ruin my plans.” Milo
grinned a little, not even bothering to be embarrassed by the tears that
welled up. “You’ll see. If she’s conscious, you’ll see her spirit, no
matter how poorly she’ll be.”
