Tuesday – Trial Day Two 11.13 a.m.

The truth was the synesthete was in an hypnotic trance of his own making. He was deep within his own subconscious. Not that anyone would have known if they had looked into the dock. Even the two people closest to him, Duncan and the other security guard, were oblivious. They, like everyone else in the court, were focussed entirely on the witness.

It was exactly what Ethan had expected. He had long known how to find ways to grow in even the most challenging of environments. It was, he acknowledged, just one more advantage he possessed.

That was his final thought.

As he distanced himself from the conscious world, Ethan felt the mix of emotions pulsing inside Duncan. He took a moment to reinforce the work he had already done and then let himself move on. Flowing, comfortable and effortless, towards the greater connection.

In the darkness he sensed Marcus’s sudden tension. It didn’t touch him. It didn’t affect him in any way. The rules of the herd did not apply. Not for him. Not here. In this state he was so far beyond them they had nothing in common. Here he was invulnerable. Faultless. Absolutely different.

So, as Marcus fought to regroup, he ignored the opportunity to press home an early advantage. Instead he simply noticed it as a traveller passing by en route to somewhere infinitely greater. When the time arrived he would open his eyes. He would look with a clarity none of them could imagine. He would hear with an acuity no human ever had. Then he would speak. Irresistibly.
