Chapter Ten
The drive home was quiet. I would have been lying if I said I wasnât afraid to face my pack. I wondered what they thought of me leaving. Would they still trust me? It wasnât like everyone liked me. I was Rikkiâs mate and if not for that, Iâd be labeled an outsider within the pack.
But what scared me the most was not knowing if Rikki and I would recover from my choices. We were mated through our wolves, but her own heart was a different story. Would we end up in a loveless relationship, only bound together through our wolves? I wouldnât be able to live that way.
The Jeep jerked to a stop, the back door opening as Malcolm stepped out, rushing to Braelin, who stood on the porch in shock. I smiled, happy to see relief loosen her shoulders. When he was nearly to her, she found the ability to move again and leapt off the porch into his arms.
I just watched and found myself tearing up at the sight. My eyes shifted off to my side as Rikki opened my passenger door. I hadnât noticed her exit the vehicle. For whatever reason, I couldnât find a way to move.
âAre you going to hide in here all night?â Rikkiâs words reminded me of the time Iâd been forced to come after learning Iâd be turning into a werewolf for the first time. Iâd been in complete denial and had sat in the car until Rikki carried me off to her shed.
I stared at the shed now. Our shed. I wouldnât act like a coward hiding inside the car.
âIt feels like so much time has passed.â
âYou havenât been introduced to this world in a positive way. They understand you were only making the best decision you knew to make.â Rikki was trying to comfort me with hopeful words.
For a few heartbeats I only stared at Rikki, needing to know if she believed her own words. Maybe sheâd spared the pack the truth of who Iâd been with and was keeping all the pain to herself.
âI wonât lie to them,â I finally said.
Rikkiâs expression blank, she nodded approvingly.
âThey all know the truth. Thereâs no reason to lie.â There was no affection in her eyes for me. She was guarded and that hurt to see. Iâd caused that.
I averted my eyes, ashamed and regretful. When I stepped out of the Jeep, all eyes turned to me. More of the pack had come out of the house, many with expressions I wasnât sure I read correctly. And a few with distrust.
Tato came to me first and embraced me tightly. His strong arms squeezed me, and I felt his genuine happiness in my return.
âIâve missed you.â His words soothed me, and I couldnât help but cry.
Rosemary came next, giving me a tight hug and shaking me from side to side.
âDonât you ever scare us like that again.â
Soon, one by one, more came to embrace me, including Cecelia and her mate and Rikkiâs second, Toni.
