19. Gossamer

Surprise, surprise, I arrive at the soirée late. Somehow, I managed to escape Bryony’s vines. After an hour, they turned into dust, and it seems she only wanted to trap me for a short time.

However, an hour may as well be an eternity in Dean Vincent’s eyes. The moment I entered the ballroom, the vamp lost it. Yet he still kept his cool since he had a number of guests around, but I could tell by the red of his eyes that he was fucking pissed.

I’d already missed my first dance with him, just as we rehearsed earlier. Big bummer. I’m in deep shit now, which was all a part of Bryony’s master plan.

I cast my eyes to the fae in question. A swarm of vampires surrounds her. One has his teeth around her neck, and she looks as if she’s enjoying herself.

Vampiric eyes follow me across the room as I glide through the throngs, my heart in my mouth. They whisper about my wings, the ones that sparkle and leave a trail of pretty dust, and it’s hopeless.

No matter what I do, I’m always going to attract attention. And Bryony will just hate me even more for it. I bet she’s glaring at me from her corner as her swarm turn to look at me now, and fuck her.

Let her come at me.

Bring it on, bitch. May the best fae win...

All I have eyes for now is Fauna. I can’t find the tall, willowy redhead anywhere, and my heart thumps for a different reason.

Oh no.

That’s when my gaze lands on Gorem. He should be serving guests, but he lingers in the shadows instead, his eyes aglow.

I rush over, gasping for air. It’s too hard to move in my tight dress. “Gorem... have... have you seen Fauna?”

His eyes move to me, well, up and down me, and I can tell by the swelling of his pupils that he approves. “Wow, Tinkerbell...”

I ignore his compliment, putting my hands on my hips. “Forget about me. Have you seen Fauna?”

The amusement vanishes from his eyes, and now he becomes that murderous little cretin again, the one that nearly stabbed me through a door.

Hopefully, he had the common sense not to hide any knives on him tonight.

“The fuck should I care...” he growls.

That’s it. I’m getting sick of his bullshit. I step into his personal space, and now I’m an inch taller than him in my heels. “Don’t kid yourself.”

We glare at each other, neither one backing down. He knows I’m going to win this time. After all, he can’t make a scene in front of our honored guests.

“Try the girl’s bathroom,” he grumbles, focusing his gaze on the crowd again.

I follow his line of vision, catching sight of Jace with a tray of wine glasses. And there’s Michael Willows too. They’re both wearing fancy tuxedos like Gorem, and they look so prim. Even Gorem washed his hair for the special event; he’s even ditched the red baseball cap, and now he looks suave.
