Kaia

I sat on the horse, contemplating the situation I found myself in. I was definitely on a different planet, probably a different dimension. Magic and fairy tale were real. And I was highly attracted to a warlord shifter. Jen and Avery were missing, and I was drooling over a man.

He was gorgeous, but a little big. He was funny, seemed to be smart even though he didn’t know much about his shifter traits—not that shifters were real. Okay, here they were real, and I understood him better than he did.

I wondered if he had the super-duper nose and night vision shifters in romance books always had. He sure fit the sexy role.

One thing he said worried me. I wasn’t a fae. I didn’t have magic. But he smelled my blood. Guess he had a good nose then. But he had to be mistaken. If there were no humans here, that meant Alara and the girl were fae, too. Maybe he smelled them on me. That had to be it.

My escort looked over at me, his brows drawn.

“What?” I asked.

“You stopped humming.”

I hadn’t realized I was humming, much less that I had stopped. His body stiffened and he crouched in the saddle. Damn, he looked vicious. I was glad I was on his good side. He made a good protector. I doubted anything could get by him.

“My humming doesn’t bother you?” I lost count of the times my brother told me to stop. At work, I didn’t even notice unless one of the customers said something. Usually good things.

“Not at all. I like it actually. It...soothes me.” He turned to look straight ahead, saying nothing more. Well, at least he didn’t threaten to cut my tongue out.

His acceptance of my quirk endeared him to me. I took a minute to tally up all the good things I had learned about him so far. He was gorgeous, funny, smart, a shifter like in books, protective, attractive, didn't mind my humming. Oh yeah, he was the perfect man or…fae, I guessed was a more accurate term.

I watched as he swept the forest with his gaze, always on guard. This was the type of man I wanted in my life all along. Sudden realization dawned on me. The perfect man was right in front of me. The warmth that effused my body when I looked at him or thought about him…I was starting to feel something for him. Something I’d never felt before and it scared me.

But we were from different places. Could this work between us? What if I went home and never met someone who made my heart race and brought a smile to my face so fast? What if he was the one for me and I walked away? I would regret it for the rest of my life.

Oh, no! I wasn’t falling in love with him, I already was in love with him. It seemed impossible, too sudden, but I knew it was right. He was right for me, I felt it with every fiber of my being.
