Chapter 19

The Second Course

On some evenings Betty was able to hurry home to a hot shower before Eliot arrived. She let the water turn her skin a deep rose, as she washed off the day while she envisioned the night. When Eliot climbed the stairs to her second story apartment behind Luke C. Ferguson’s store, her loins involuntarily echoed the slight shaking of the floor that signaled his approach. When she emerged from the bathroom, her body wrapped in an oversized towel, she was primed to greet him.

Usually Eliot didn’t give her time for either shower or fantasy. Coming home she would open the door to find him sitting in her living room. He rose hungrily to touch her, unfastening the pink buttons on the front of her white uniform, the ones that matched the pink trim on the collar. He dove immediately for her breasts, uncovering them, and then, burying his head in their softness, sucked in their nurturance. By the time he pushed up her skirt her body was responding, and when he entered her, hard and ready, she cried out.

After a little self-conscious ritual of laughter at their intensity, he picked her up and, carrying her into the tiny bedroom, deposited her on the bed where he slowly removed her crumpled dress. Finally he kissed her with the soul-reaching tenderness she craved, while he explored every alive place on her body, letting the fineness of her hair, with its clinging odor of fried food, tickle his nose.

This time the act was long and with a different tempo and intent, he no longer the starved adolescent, she less the experienced object. And now Betty was totally free and unrestrained.

It was following these times, becoming frightened, she removed herself and, fleeing into the bathroom, hid the sounds of her sobs under the full force of the shower. She wouldn’t let him see her cry, and he, spent from release, didn’t realize she was gone.
