Chapter Seven

If sharing a bed with another man had turned out to be a lot easier than Donovan had ever thought it could be, working out what to say to that same man the following morning was a hell of a lot more complicated.

Donovan hesitated in the kitchen doorway, watching Tony savour his first cup of coffee of the day. “Thank you for letting me stay here last night.”

Tony looked up as he realised he was no longer alone. His lips quirked into a smile. “I liked having you here. You’re really snuggly in your sleep—it’s nice.”

Donovan fiddled with the sleeves on his borrowed shirt. They’d unrolled again during the night and were now so long they completely covered his hands. “I understand if you’ve changed your mind after sleeping on it.” Donovan forced himself to get the words out at a volume where they could be heard and understood, but it wasn’t easy. Even though he knew he had to give Tony the out, the idea that Tony might take it stabbed deep inside him.

“Changed my mind about what?” Tony said. He held out a hand to Donovan, and against all his intentions, Donovan found himself stepping forward and taking it. Suddenly, he was standing directly in front of Tony.

“About everything. About us. About getting me to the point where we can…”

“I haven’t changed my mind about anything.” Tony slid his arms around Donovan and settled his hands on the small of his back. “But I’m glad you asked.”

Donovan glanced up at him. “You are?”

“Of course. If you don’t tell me what you’re worried about, I can’t fix it.” If you do tell me what you’re worried about, then I will fix it. Even if Tony didn’t say the last bit out loud, Donovan still got the message. There was no doubting Tony’s complete confidence in his ability to fix the whole world.

Donovan smiled as he dipped his head and pressed a kiss against Tony’s shoulder, loving how safe that made him feel. “What happens now?”

“Now,” Tony said. “I kiss you good morning, like this.” The kiss was soft, and sweet, and tasted like coffee. “Then, I drive you home so you can get dressed for work. Then, I drive you to work so you won’t be late. After we’re done with work or training or whatever else we have to do, we meet up tonight.” He seemed to pause to think for a moment. “In the pub. Is eight okay for you?”

Donovan nodded, sure that was safer than having to find words. If Tony wanted to go to the pub, that’s where they’d go.

Tony stroked his cheek. “You have lots of great qualities, sweetheart. The ability to lie worth a damn isn’t one of them.”

“I’m…not always good at remembering that other men aren’t Ryan,” Donovan admitted. Even as he spoke, a hundred memories of minor and not so minor humiliations nudged at the corners of his mind. “There’d be less chance of me embarrassing you in front of your friends if you…kept me and them in separate parts of your life.
