Chapter 31

Crossing the Boundary

Toby caught up with Richard at the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre ten days after the Friday night out with his friends. He made a special trip directly from the centre to Tallon’s home at Karalee.

From the outside, the two-storey brick home was not unlike many other homes in the area, which is how Dave Chapman liked it. The security though, was high end, and not easily spotted by an untrained eye.

The Ford Focus pulled up in the driveway. Toby got out. Inside the home a low beeping noise indicated a presence near the front of the house. Tallon watched the video as Toby approached. He opened the door and invited him in.

‘Hi there Tubby. You’re a few days later than I expected.’

‘I was there as we planned, but he was away somewhere seeing a shrink. Sorry about that.’

‘Want a drink?’

‘A beer would be great.’

The two sat out the back on the deck that surrounded the pool.

‘Cheers,’ said Tallon, raising his stubby. ‘What’s the news?’

‘Richard wasn’t in the best of moods. Not really up for a chat, and he was pretty pissed off with some of the assessments that say he’s not a nutter.’

‘And…’

‘Yeah, he remembered the Ezekiel name. Didn’t know the surname and thought it was a property on Boundary Road. It’s a long road, so not sure if that’s any help.’

Tallon pulled some folded notes from his pocket. ‘Sounds promising.’ He folded them out. ‘There is just the one Kaufman on that road. That has to be the one. Bloody beautiful. Nice work tubs.’

‘What do you do now?’

‘Yeah. Gotta be careful. My old man wanted to know if we found anything. I best chat to him about it. I’m thinking a home visit will be in order sometime soon.’

Dave and Rita, Tallon’s parents, arrived home at six that night. Tallon gave a hand to bring in the groceries.

‘Will we be having the pleasure of your company tonight then?’ asked Rita.

‘Yeah, Mum.’ He gave her a quick peck on the cheek.

‘Hmm… is everything okay?’

‘Yeah, of course. Everything’s great.’ He pulled a few grapes off the bunch as she put them in the fruit bowl.

‘Dinner won’t be far off,’ she said.

‘Cool.’ He took a dozen more then went out to the deck where he had a beer on the go. Ten minutes later Dave joined him, helping himself to a drink from the bar fridge.

‘What’s going on then?’ said his father as he sat.

‘Does something need to be?’

‘Yes, you sitting out here alone. You’re brooding about something and just itching to have a chat with your dad. If you were in front of the telly, playing computer games or had mates or girls over I would think different.’

‘We’ve found the guy we were looking for. Well, not one hundred percent positive, but if I were to place a bet, I’d put the house on it.’

‘My house?’

‘Yeah, your house,’ said Tallon.

‘Okay, this is the moment when you give me the full story so I can make an informed decision on what to do.
