Merry pulled her Bugatti Chiron past the fighting at the south end of the city by driving the beltway interstate around the less interesting paras. Of course, Dexx would take control of the vampire force. Nobody but him would even think of fighting with agitated vampires she’d driven nearly mad with her own special magick.

The power swelled forward down the road, the magickal energies leeching back into the earth. She pressed the pedal to the floor and jetted on, rushing toward the greatest source of blood.

She found the road she wanted and yanked the wheel. They weren’t far, but she stopped clear of any engagement, and parked the car. She didn’t need to be a part of the fighting. She only needed to be close enough to get what she wanted.

She drank in the power Dexx and his paras created for her. Blood magick energy coursed over her from the ocean of blood he and his band of vampires spilled.

Regular bloodshed trickled with power. The power the vampires made with her magick driving them was so much more. It was more intense than anything they could do on their own. She’d been sprinkling the vampires with her own blood spice, slowly pushing them to bloodlust. She let her arms raise of their own accord, reveling in the ecstasy of the moment.

Oh, there were so many insults and injuries to repay. She would start with Dexx and his ever-running mouth. Then, she would visit Paige while she grieved over the loss of yet another love of her life.

Merry smiled. Once they had been dealt with, Merry would broker the peace treaty with Walton. The entire west of the continent would be hers. She would cede the deserts to the McCree clan with small perpetual insurance dues.

Add to that the massive price on Dexx. Annelle Rovoski had agreed to pay a massive price and the artifact. The amethyst crystal Dexx had so thoughtfully brought to her.

Merry would have settled for the artifact alone, but she could always use a little more money to spread her influence.

And, the butter on her bread, the world would go relatively back to normal. The world economy wouldn’t have to shift or be remade because of one woman and her insane and inappropriate crusade.

Merry smiled at the plans all coming to fruition.

The first tendrils of the power helped create the conduit. Merry strengthened the siphon and blood magick slammed into her. She felt the earth, the plants, the very molecules comprising all of it.

The sun dimmed as her own power eclipsed the local star.

Merry’s fingers curled in fists.

She would pluck out the eye of the saber and show it to him. She would challenge the goddess.

She was magick.
