Chapter Eight
âDo you want to play a game of cards?â Raine asked, looking over to Violet, who lay on her belly in front of the TV. Raine rarely used it, finding that introducing a television into oneâs home created a distance that separated everyone who lived there. Endless hours going by while you entertained yourself inside other peopleâs lives.
To some degree, she knew that this was hypocritical, considering she read books during her free time. But books were educational, and they inspired the imagination. Watching something on a little box gave you everything, made you lazy and foolish. Why she even had one was beyond her, but it was preinstalled into her apartment before she even moved to Tennessee.
âUhm, sure,â Violet said. Raine needed a distraction from the explosion at Kelly Manor and the loss of Simon. Both horrible events occurring so soon after one another broke her heart, leaving her reeling and begging for a reprieve. But there was none, not with the Takahashi brothers coming after her.
âWhat do you know how to play?â Raine asked, assuming that Violet had no understanding of the gambling games she enjoyed. Had it been up to her, sheâd have dealt a hand of blackjack with a few dollars up for grabs. But it wasnât up to her. Violet was a child, and subjecting her to a life of gambling and understanding cards before she was even mature enough to sit at the tables might have only spelled bad news.
âRummy?â Violet asked. Raine nodded her head and dealt the cards.
They played for a while, with intense focus. Violet was much like her, never one to throw a hand or lose for no reason. That determination was going to take Violet far, as it had Raine. But where would she go? There was no promise of staying here, nor did Raine want to bring her into this life.
After a few hands, with an even score between Raine and Violet, now preparing for the last few draws hoping for that one miracle card to win the game â Violet spoke up.
âDo you know what happened to my parents?â the words escaped her. Raine knew it was going to come eventually, and the last two days without the harsh reality of what happened were a blessing in disguise. But there was nothing to say, either. Over the days they spent together, Raine considered the truth, sharing her dirty secret and letting Violet know that her parents were dead.
Honesty, in this case, was not the best policy.
Then what? A lie? Tell Violet that they were on the lookout? That she was abandoned?
All viable options but none of them were going to work.
âCan I ask you something?â Raine started, trying to avoid the hard question. She folded the six cards in her hand, tucking them neatly on the table.
âSure?â Violet replied, drawing a card from the pack.
âHow did you even know where to come looking for them? Who brought you to me?â Raine already knew the answer. It was the Headhunter who fed the girl all the stories needed.
