Finn’s House, San Francisco

I was lying on one of Finn’s sofas as he placed a box of pizza in front of us. I had to pay him back. Maybe I could sneak a couple of bills into his coat pocket.

I hadn’t thought about what happened between us at the club. I shoved that memory as far back as I could. And luckily for me, Finn seemed to have done the same thing.

His text to “hang out” felt like a welcome return to normality, especially with my budding relationship with Wesley and whatever the heck was going on with Luca. I recalled the tortured look in his eyes when I nearly cried in front of him. It tore at me. But I needed to sort out my emotions, and as usual, I was running from that.

You’re pathetic, my subconscious spat at me.

Determined to forget all the ugly relationship drama for a couple of hours, I focused on enjoying my day.

I absolutely loved Finn’s house. His company was based out in San Francisco, and while he kept a place in New York, I rarely found myself there.

His mansion in California boasted glass sunroofs for optimal light, and deep maroon wooden panels lined the walls and floors. There was a high-end rustic feel, a characteristic further exacerbated by the slate fireplaces scattered around the home.

With both our busy schedules, weekends were often the only time we could hang out and relax together. A part of me believed it was a pleasant change of pace for him every so often, since he was such a social butterfly. Plus, with Wesley and Theo based largely in New York, and me on the West Coast, the only guy I could see impulsively was Finn.

But Wesley was in town to see me. I was impatient for him to finish his work so we could enjoy some together.

“Pepperoni, red peppers, bacon, and beef for my lady,” Finn declared, flinging open the box with a flourish. “A pizza dinner is the best dinner.”

I giggled at his antics. “Wait, where’s your pizza?” Finn wasn’t a picky eater overall, but there were a handful of dishes that he was rather particular about. Let’s just say he was an olives-must-be-on-pizza guy.

“I’m fine with yours,” he said, picking up a slice and ducking to catch a string of cheese in his mouth. “Besides, you can’t finish it. You eat like a mouse. Nibbling away, it’ll take you years to finish this.”

“You ordered a large!” I defended myself. I liked to savour my pizza.

“Since you’re always with me, I assumed you prefer things large,” he snickered, taking another big bite.

He ducked when I swung a couch cushion at him. It didn’t hit him, but at least he choked on his pizza. That was a victory in my book.

We polished off the food quickly. While he threw out the garbage, I got Finn a beer while I made myself a cup of camomile tea.

“So what’s with the men you hired to watch me?” I asked nonchalantly, blowing at the steam in my mug.
