Chapter Fifteen

Waiting

The next few days passed in a blur. Taylor woke up alone, but feeling much better. Evan came by several times to check on her, but she kept throwing him out to sleep and eventually he stopped. He told her to just call him when she felt better and she’d nodded.

Yumiko dropped by daily, bringing her food and checking her wounds. She said once that Gabriel must be worried, since he sought her out at dinner to ask about Taylor.

“Has he come by to visit you?” Yumiko asked.

“No, I haven’t seen him since he beat the crap out of Evan,” Taylor replied.

“Maybe he tried and you were just sleeping. He told me that he came once, but you didn’t answer, so he left.” Yumiko looked away. "He seemed concerned. Maybe you should call him and let him know that you’re all right.”

“Why does he care so much?” Taylor asked, confused.

“I don’t know. Maybe he likes you.”

“He barely even knows me. All he’s done is insult me, mess with me in the library, and beat up my friend in the hall. He has a weird way of showing that he likes someone.”

“Well, he did carry you in here, and he was very clear that I needed to take care of you. He wanted me to call him if you said that ghost came back.”

“Yeah, carrying me in here and trying to take care of me was nice, I guess. Even though I didn’t ask him to.”

“And I think that he and Evan have had it out for each other for a long time, so that wasn’t really about you,” Yumiko continued. "But he did try to make Evan mad by saying that you made out with him in the elevator. And he made fun of you being Evan’s new girlfriend.”

“What? We did not! That jerk, I can’t believe he would say something like that!” Taylor seethed. “And to think, I actually tried to help him in the elevator. Next time I’ll just let her eat him.”

Yumiko smiled briefly. It faded as she started fiddling with the tab of her soda. “So, does that mean that you and Evan are dating?” she finally asked.

“Ha! No, I couldn’t date Evan. He’s got a girlfriend and he’s way too much of a pretty boy for me,” Taylor replied. “I still can’t believe Gabriel said that."

“What do you mean, a pretty boy? And who is his girlfriend?”

“Jenna.”

“Oh,” Yumiko replied, looking unhappy. “I didn’t know they had gotten back together. She came up here a few weeks ago to get some of the stuff he gave her and said they broke up. She was really upset about it.”

“That’s exactly what I mean when I say I could never date him. Even though he says they aren’t together, he was still holding her hand and acting like they were a couple when I met her. She was really jealous of the time we spent together on the way back from Austin and threatened to have me kicked out of school here.
