Evan’s favorite diner was close by so they decided to take a leisurely stroll there and enjoy the sunny, though cool, weather of the day. Evan slipped his hand over Mark’s as they walked. Not something Mark would have dreamed of doing in Spokane, Washington. But hey, this is Los Angeles, California, he thought. Neither of them paid much attention to the guy approaching until he suddenly had a camera in his hand and had taken three rapid shots of them in quick succession.

“Thanks, guys,” he said with an almost manic grin on his face. “Good follow-up to this.” He thrust a newspaper into Evan’s hand then took off before they could protest.

“What the hell?”

Evan glanced at the front page of the paper and frowned. “It’s a scandal sheet.” The headline was some bullshit about Prince Harry defying his grandmother to date an American billionaire’s daughter, the photograph so out of focus and scratchy it could have been anyone. Evan was about to throw it in a nearby trash bin when Mark asked, “What’s that in the corner, down there? It looks a bit like you.”

“Passionate farewell at LAX, story page nine.” Evan growled. “Shit, it’s a picture of me and Dareck at the airport.” He quickly turned to page nine and there it was, a really clear photograph of Dareck kissing him on the lips. The caption read, Porn Star Lovers Bid Each Other Adieu. Evan sighed. “Crap.”

Evan read the rest of the article as they walked to the diner. “Porn stars Dean Masters and Dareck Dante are caught on camera as they say a fond farewell. Dareck was leaving for parts unknown. Dean, who now masquerades under the name Evan Ericson—assholes, that’s my name!” he interjected bitterly. He glanced at Mark. “Sorry. Anyway, blah, blah, blah… Masters or Ericson looked dejected as he waved his lover au revoir. Maybe his new part in a legit movie will cheer him up. Our source tells us he is starring in Burning Hearts, an indie movie directed by Charles Bennett. Does Mr. Bennett know he hired a porn actor for the part? Does this mean Burning Hearts will be retitled Crash and Burn Hearts? We can’t wait to find out!”

They had reached the diner, but Evan paused in pushing the door open. “You still hungry?”

Mark shook his head. “Not really.”

“I think I need a drink.”

“Just one, though,” Mark said. “You have scenes this afternoon.”

“Yeah…” Evan sighed. “That.” They set off toward a bar a few yards from the diner. “I wonder if Richard and Charles will still want me after they read this piece of crap.”

“Evan, they know you worked in porn. I imagine they would take into consideration this kind of thing happening. The paparazzi love to stir up shit like this, especially when it involves gays.”

They stepped inside the bar, the dimness startling in contrast to the brilliant sunshine outside. “I think I’ll have a Scotch.” Evan pulled out his billfold. “What about you?”

“Just a glass of wine…white.
