Chapter Eight

Sabotage

Thursday, June 1

The next day Jacques and Peter rode their bicycles to visit Monsieur Jean-Philippe Laurier, the last of the three agents Peter was to contact. Laurier’s home was to the south of Calais, so Jacques and Peter took a route that stayed on the outskirts of the city. Jacques had given them both thick, dark beards and hair to match for the occasion, and they were dressed in ordinary civilian clothing. It was fairly early, and they saw few people on their way around the town. They did pass a few plane wrecks; the burned-up airplanes jutted out of otherwise normal fields. Peter hoped the occupants of each plane had parachuted to safety. The planes were a little like the bomb craters he saw in the city—jarring interruptions of what would have otherwise been a beautiful, peaceful part of the world.

They left their bicycles about half a mile from Laurier’s home. They didn’t want him to see two visitors, so they split up. Jacques left the road and moved swiftly through the field. Peter walked at a more leisurely pace along the road. He passed only one other house before Laurier’s; most of the walk was along fields.

Peter knocked on Laurier’s front door and waited. After a minute, he knocked again, but no one came to the door. He walked over to the garage. Jacques was there, but Laurier’s car and radio were missing.

“McDougall said he reports by radio every Saturday,” Peter said, a little puzzled. It was a Thursday.

“Maybe he’s hiding it somewhere.”

The two of them checked all the doors and looked through all the windows but decided not to pick any locks. Jacques had briefly gone through the home only days before. They rode back to the Olivier farmhouse with plans to try again the next day.

By evening, Peter was fighting boredom at the Olivier farmhouse. The afternoon had been a dull one for him. Genevieve went into town to collect laundry, with Louis LeBras as her escort. Birgit stayed in her home. Jacques made repairs around the house and worked on the cheese in their cellar. Peter weeded a few patches in the garden, studied his scriptures, and watched the American planes come in for an air raid.

By the time Jacques, Genevieve, and Peter were finished with supper and the evening BBC ritual, Peter couldn’t hide his boredom any longer. He didn’t mention anything out loud, but he couldn’t help remembering part of his assignment was to make the Germans notice an increase in Resistance activity.

Jacques noticed Peter’s fidgeting. “It’s a good thing you aren’t an injured pilot stuck in the Notre Dame of Calais. You have cabin fever after one afternoon of not doing anything. They often have to stay inside a small room for weeks at a time.”

Peter recognized Jacques’s statement as a well-deserved chastisement and nodded. Patience, he thought to himself. It was something he’d never had in great abundance.

“However,” Jacques continued, “since you’re bored, we might as well engage in something productive.
