I stretch out in my bed, my mind is running riot. So many thoughts clamouring for attention, and it is a long time before sleep overtakes me.

The last thing to come to mind before I finally drift off, is the thought of a recurring dream that has been with me for years.

In it, I am being chased across an open field in war-torn France during World War Two. It is night, but the moonlight illuminates my surroundings clearly. I am running through long grass to meet an aircraft waiting for me at the far end. In the forest behind me I can hear my pursuers and see torches flashing in the trees. Harsh guttural commands in German followed by dogs barking become louder as they come out of the trees, to the edge of the clearing.

This is one dream I hope doesn’t come true, for in it I never make it to the waiting aircraft, I am shot in the back, left to die alone on a grass field in the moonlight . . .
