WREN

There were plenty of things I wanted. A stable home life. A good place to live. Food on my plate and clothes on my back. Friends. People I could call family and mean it.

But revenge had never been on that list.

Of course, I loathed my family. I hated what they’d done to me—the way they’d made me feel. I hated their power and their complete disregard for people around them disguised as “just the way we do things.” I hated the way they would step on anyone—even their own blood—to get what they wanted.

But all I’d ever wanted was to be free.

“I don’t need revenge,” I whispered, the truth of that statement questionable at best. It was the right answer, though—even if it wasn’t honest. But making my family pay for their crimes was laughable. I’d already taken all my power back. I’d ripped their power source away from them, and by the looks of this place, I powered the whole fucking house.

What more could I do to them than that?

“The fuck you don’t,” Fiona hissed. “I showed you basic kindness and you acted like I was giving you the most precious gift. I treated you like a person, and it was as if you’d only gotten that round about never in your life. Day in and day out for how many years have you been alive now?”

I waggled my hand. “Twenty-four-ish years, but I don’t know the date anymore. I could be twenty-eight by now.”

Fiona planted her fists on her hips, giving me the full hip-jut and stomping foot. “Not the fucking point and you know it. Stop changing the subject. And if you won’t do it for revenge, do it for me. Those bitches need to take the fall for the Hell gate fiasco, and dead bitches are much easier to pin shit on than live ones.”

That was… fair. Not that I thought I could kill anyone. Plus, I still didn’t want to go down to that rancid dungeon. Nico’s little power boost made my sense of smell bulletproof, and I was paying for it now.

“There better be nose bleach after this,” I grumbled, tipping my chin at Zephyr to lead the way.

Of all the places he could have brought me, here was the absolute dead last one I wanted to ever visit. In fact, I’d sort of made a promise to myself after they’d unceremoniously thrown me to the mercy of the council that I would never darken their door again in my life. Mentally, I’d cut them off, and after Eloise’s tantrum up in Blue Ridge, I was more than done with my family. Had I known it was like cutting off a limb, I would have used a sharper knife.

Zephyr ducked, his horns nearly scraping the stone ceiling as he moved down the stairs. Reluctantly, Nico followed, his hand securely wrapped around mine as his thumb made a circuit over the inside of my wrist. If I didn’t know better, I would believe he was trying to assess my pulse, but I did.
