Helping Her Best Friend

Seeing Jack cry was probably the worst thing Mary had ever seen in her life. She felt guilty for something she had not done. The man looked so downtrodden that it was hard to picture him in any other form other than the one he was in. It was as if someone had taken his soul and crushed it. She sat there wondering what it was that she was going to tell him to shut him up. There was nothing she could tell Jack.

Normally, it was usually Jack who made the effort to stop her from crying. Now it was her turn and there was nothing she could do. She thought about all the words he told her when she was crying, but none of that sounded appropriate. Sitting there doing nothing sounded even worse than saying those words.

She reached out her hand and touched his shoulder. Whether he felt it or not, Jack did not tell. He simply went on sobbing and making such an ugly noise that Mary was tempted to ask him to shut up. Yet she could not do something like that. It was wrong, and a little insensitive of her.

“Come on, Jack. She is not worth your tears. You have got to hold it together,” she said, sounding as encouraging as possible. Whether it was doing any good to him, she could not tell. All she could tell was that he had at least stopped making those sounds and was sobbing silently.

She wished they had talked about this before. Mary had cried so many times that Jack knew why she was crying from the way she was crying. He then knew what to do under different situation to stop her from crying and bring her back to the world of the living. Jack had never cried before this, and if he did, he did not cry in front of her.

“Jack, do you need anything?” she asked. The man sat up on the bed and took a deep breath. Even without the sobbing, tears still fell down his face. Something in her wanted to say tell him that it was a self-inflicted wound but then she figured that this was not the right time for it. Maybe when he was a little calm then she would revisit the story with the man and determine their next move. There had to be a next move. The man would not cry forever. As a matter of fact, the tears were drying up. His breathing was back to normal.

“Thank God, I did not know what to tell you,” she said smiling. She was trying to cheer him up.

“I am sorry you had to see that,” Jack started, wiping away his tears with the back of his hand.

“Come on, we all cry. It is healthy and all you know. You are like releasing a lot of toxins by crying. Just make sure that you don’t cry because of the wrong person,” Mary said. She did not have to tell him that.
