It was Tuesday.

Doug left at 6 AM to head to work.

The children were at school, and she had just finished the housework. For now, it was reasonably tidy, but that would change within ten minutes of the children getting home. Toys would appear everywhere, and they would trample mud through the house, or spill or drop something.

Then, once she had them under control, Doug would return from work, expecting food ready for him to grab, along with a beer from the fridge next to it, to take straight to his chair in front of the TV.

He wouldn't bother with a hello, or how are you. He would dump his heavy work boots in the porch and stroll straight into the kitchen, while ignoring his children and wife. He has been at work all day, providing for the family. He pays most of the bills; he doesn't need to interact with them as well. He is tired. He just wants his comfortable chair, a hot meal, and a cold can of cheap beer while he settles down in front of the replays.

She learned a long time ago not to ask him how his day went.

"What do you expect it to be like?" he shouted at her after they had been married for five years, and Cory was waking them both up every night, and it got to the point that Doug slept downstairs on the couch just to get a full nights sleep.

"I work my fingers to the fucking bones to provide for us, and all you do is nag and bitch!" He had then picked up his plate and beer and went to turn to head to the front room.

"And another thing, would it kill you to try to make an effort. You don't bother with makeup anymore, or even bother brushing your hair. You look like a fucking tramp." He then went and dropped into his chair for the night, while turning the TV up that little bit louder than usual.

She could have shouted back that she was also exhausted from looking after their son with no help from him, and from the mountain of housework, that needed doing everyday, and that the food didn't magically appear from the food fairies, it had to be prepared. Also, while Cory was in school, she worked as well, which he seemed to conveniently forget.

Doug was so riled up from shouting that he hadn't noticed that Cory was over as Mrs. Thompson's, and that there were two plates set at the table with a candle in the middle. And she did have makeup on and a nice dress. Tonight was the night she was going to tell Doug she was pregnant again, with twins.

To add insult to injury, Doug's mother Edna, would turn up unannounced at least once a week and sit in the front room with her son, watching the TV. She would act like royalty while she complained the house was a mess, and that the children had snot on their faces, and mud on their clothes.
