Chapter Seven

Spring in Paris

Much, much, later, we emerged from the bathroom in matching white bathrobes. I fell upon the bed feeling like I had like my skin was glowing. Sophie joined me, a languid expression on her face. We lay face to face, breathing heavily.

“You look amazing,” I told her. “Like an angel.”

“I’m no angel,” she said.

Without her make-up, Sophie looked so fresh-faced, young and virginal that it was hard to believe she sold herself to strangers voluntarily.

No matter how much I tried to pretend her work did not bother me, I wanted at least know why she did it. “Sophie … please don’t get mad – but I need to know something if we’re going to keep seeing each other - which is something I really want. Why do you … sell your body?”

She turned away from me, like she was shunning me, but then she started talking in a low voice, telling me the reason why.

“I was born in Moscow. I had a happy childhood, but we were very poor. My parents were both teachers, but they did not get paid much. We lived in an apartment with only three small rooms – me, my parents, my grandparents and my brother and sisters. I used to watch Western TV and dream about living in a big house. When I was fifteen, I was desperate to become independent and leave Moscow. One day a very glamorous woman approached me, telling me she was an agent for an international modelling agency. She said I was beautiful and could make lots of money – thousands of dollars a week. She persuaded my parents to let me sign up with her agency on my sixteenth birthday. My first job was in Paris. I was so happy to be flying to Europe. It was like a dream come true. But when I arrived I found out she’d lied about everything. There were some men waiting outside the airport. They took away my passport and told me what I’d be really doing in Paris. Having sex with men for money. They told me their contact in Russia would hurt my family if I did not do it. I had no choice. If I’d refused, they would have no use for me. They’d kill me after killing my family. But if I worked for them, I could at least send money back to my family – giving them a better life. That is why I do it. I’ve been doing it six years now. My family still think I’m a model. I sent fake pictures home to prove it.”

She faced me again, tears in her eyes.

“Now do you understand?”

“I think so. Is there no way of escaping?”

“Maybe when I’m too old to make money for Nico he’ll let me go. Until then, I have to do it. It’s not so bad. I have to pay Nico five hundred euros every day – but I get to keep anything I earn above that. I’d never make that in a normal job.
