Eliza didn’t want to listen to Justin Black describe the ways he had tortured Justice. Even if her young detective turned out to be everything she suspected he was and worse, there was a part of her that still cared about him. When she looked into his light-brown eyes, sometimes she could see the scared little boy he used to be. She wanted to protect that boy and keep him safe.

Nobody else ever had. That was clear enough.

“Tiny Tim was a quick learner, and he’s only gotten better over the years. He sure seems to think the student has become the master.” Justin smiled nostalgically. Then he gritted his teeth with a growl. “Little prick. Dirty, self-righteous little prick. I should’ve cut his dick off when I had the chance.”

Eliza masked her discomfort at Justin’s venom by glancing at her watch and sighing deeply. She turned her back on him. “If you have nothing useful to tell me⁠—”

“He gloated at me when he came here. That he was out there and I was in here. He thinks he’s so smart. But there are things he doesn’t know. Three things I know that he thinks he knows, but he doesn’t know.”

She glanced over her shoulder. “Care to elaborate?”

“No.” He licked his lips. “Those I will carry in my pocket ’til the end. I will never give them up to any silly promise or a lie.”

Eliza turned to face him again and interlaced her fingers, as if she had all the time in the world. “Then you don’t have anything useful to say?”

He tilted his head, a twisted smirk playing on his lips. “Would you like to know what me and Timmy talked about when he came to see me?”

“Yes.”

Justin’s eyes darted from side to side, and he bit the tip of his tongue like he was making up his mind about something. “He wanted to know about The Pupil, about Xavier. My disappointment.”

“Was it you who sent him after Justice?”

“Why do you all you cops think I’m magic?” Laughter pealed from his throat. “Look me in the eye, bitch.”

She tried to keep her features impassive, fighting the urge to flinch at his taunting laughter. “I am. So you admitted you still have contact with the outside.”

“I suppose you’re gonna shut me down, hmm? But if you do that, I’ll never tell you what I know.”

Eliza rubbed her temples, growing tired of these childish games. Justin spoke in circles and riddles. It was the very definition of exhausting. “What will it take to get you to tell me what you know?”

“Two things. First, I need you to answer a question.”

Eliza’s facade of patient impatience threatened to slip. She clenched her jaw, determined to maintain control.

“What?”

Justin started salaciously jerking around in his chains. “How’s Justice’s sex life?”

“What?”

He stopped his repulsive motions and pressed his lips together, opening his bright blue eyes wide. Suddenly he was very still, waiting for an answer.
