As expected, Mark woke up feeling like road kill. He sat up and groaned, clutching his head in his hands. He moved to the edge of the bed and dropped his legs over the side. Pretending to be asleep, I rolled over and faced away from him so he could have a moment to collect himself. I listened as he blew out a deep lungful of air. “Shit,” he muttered under his breath.

The sudden slamming of the front door echoed from downstairs. I held my breath, wondering what my mom might have heard. Moments later, the faint sounds of her car starting and pulling out of the driveway spread a sense of relief through me. Dodged that bullet. I wasn’t sure how I would have explained a near-naked man being in my bed. Craning my neck to peer over my shoulder, I found Mark facing me, his mouth curved up in a crooked grin.

“Close one, huh?” he joked.

“I guess you could say that,” I responded, turning full around to push up into a sitting position.

“Listen, about last night—” he began.

“It’s okay,” I said. Reaching out and touching his hand, I asked, “How are you feeling?”

“Honestly? Like shit,” he replied, letting out a small chuckle.

“What can I do to help? Can I make you something to eat?” I offered.

“Thanks, but I don’t think I can stomach anything right now,” he admitted. “I could use a shower, though. Would that be okay?”

“Yeah, of course,” I warmly replied.

Mark pushed himself up from the bed and headed to the bathroom. Falling back onto my pillow, I mentally played back the last 24 hours as I waited for him to shower. "What a difference a day makes," I thought with mixed emotions.

The abrasive sound of my telltale ringtone broke me out of my reverie. Twisting to the side, I reached over to grab my cell phone from the nightstand. The name Cali flashed across the screen. “Hey,” I answered.

“Spring break, chica!” she bellowed.

I rolled my eyes, knowing that my week of fun had already been planned for me. “It’s not here yet,” I laughed.

“It’s right around the corner, Kels. Just wait ’til you see what I’ve got lined up for us. It’ll be legendary!”

Giggling at her over-the-top enthusiasm, I reminded her, “That’s what you say every year.”

“And have I ever steered you wrong?” she asked.

Not wanting to disappoint her, I replied, “No, I guess not.”

“That’s what I’m talking about!” she screamed.

“Jeez, who put extra sugar on your cornflakes this morning?” I teased.

“Oh, come on! Can’t a girl get excited to see her best friend and have a little fun?” Her tone sounded mockingly hurt.

My eyes snapped to the doorway—catching Mark, fresh from his shower in nothing but a towel. “Uh…sure…” I trailed off.

“Kels…HELLO? Are you even listening to me?”

“Uh huh…sure I am. Listen, Cali, I need to go. Can I call you later?”

“Yeah, I guess so. What’s going on with you?” she asked.

I wasn’t in the mood for the Cali riot act, so I decided that a little white lie was in order.
