I’ve been culture-fied

Hey everybody! Our school finally finished its cultural festival. If you don’t know what that is, picture a big carnival—but inside classrooms! There was so much cool stuff. They had a Hawaiian cafe and lots of miniature restaurants serving food. Traditional Japanese festival stuff like ice cream, yakisoba and taiyaki, the little fish-shaped cakes filled with red bean paste, but also weird things I’ve never heard of.

One class made a roller coaster simulator with a projector and a giant wooden box. The classroom next to ours filmed a movie about Hulk Hogan, this 80s American wrestler eating a million Twinkies. All the third-years (Grade 12) did musicals.

My class built a maze out of cardboard in our classroom. It was actually pretty well-done and filled with SO MANY traps, haha. Dead ends and hidden doors and stuff. Some of my classmates sat inside and changed stuff around, so even if you were following someone through the maze, they could swing the wall around and block you off. It was SO MUCH FUN. We had strobe lights and the boys actually BUILT these little fog machines to scatter around. The guys in the Science Club put them together. Isn’t that amazing?!

I think I’ve made myself a new friend, too. A guy in my class came to my rescue when I was having a “disagreement” with a couple of other girls. Though I think some of my classmates think it’s weird…the guys mostly pal around with each other. There’s more of a gender split in Japan. Now I’m apparently one of the guys, hah. If you know me from back home, how weird is THAT, right?

Don’t worry, I won’t be talking baseball anytime soon!
