Ian was chopping wood for the fire. Edie watched him for a moment through the window, admiring the sheen of sweat on his upper body as he lifted the ax, the flex of muscles in his back as he swung it down again. She thought about going out to him. If he knew she needed him, he would drop the ax in a heartbeat. She could have him there in the forest, on the cool ground, against a tree, or just supported by Ian’s strong arms. She almost knocked on the glass, but pulled her hand away at the last minute.

He looked at peace, absorbed as he was in the chore, and she didn’t want to disturb him. Hadn’t she disturbed his life enough as it was? Let him take this break from the houseful of wolves she’d brought to his door. She knew she could lean on him, but she also wanted to prove that she could stand on her own two feet. Turning away from the window, she headed upstairs to take a bath. A nice long soak might not stop the heat, but at least she’d smell better.

Ian’s bathroom looked as if it had been newly renovated. The stone tiles on the floor were dark earth tones of brown and gray like the mountain the cabin was built on. There was a wide vanity across from the tub that she suspected had been custom built to fit the space. The honey stain on the wood matched the support beam that ran across the high slanted ceiling overhead. The tub was separated from the shower by a half wall. The toilet was tucked away behind another closed door.

It was a true sanctuary. She imagined that Ian had designed the room and completed the work himself. It had the feeling of a space lovingly crafted, and she knew from personal experience that he was very good with his hands.

While the water ran, she rifled through the cabinet searching for a bottle of bubbles or a bath bomb. Ian, bachelor that he was, was sadly lacking in luxury goods. She found a bottle of scented oil tucked away in the back inside a basket that looked like it had been part of a gift set. She wondered if it had been left behind by the sister she had yet to meet. She frowned. Or a lover she had yet to hear about.

There was an awful lot she didn’t know about Ian.

She brushed aside the flash of uncertainty. She knew the important things. He was strong, but he didn’t use his strength to dominate. He was kind, but not a pushover. He was smart and creative and brave. She had plenty of time to learn everything else.

She wanted to meet his sister. She wanted to know about his past. She had no regrets whatsoever about claiming him as her mate.

But…could she be happy living all alone with him up here?

She stripped out of her T-shirt and panties and tossed them aside. She had yet to come across the laundry room, but she could search it out later.
