Dakota
Something is wrong.
The feeling of foreboding hasn't left me since the moment Chance walked away from us before second period. He hasn't been back since. I haven't even seen him anywhere around school. It's making me edgy.
Brooklynn keeps giving me questioning looks as we settle into our seats in the auditorium. It's study hall time, or for us seniors, play practice, and I've been looking toward this for days. Except now. I just need to know where Chance is.
"Dakota, what is up with you?" Brooklynn finally asks as the rest of the class trickles in. I know I must look mad, twisting every which way, trying to see if Chance is here yet.
"Nothing is up." She rolls her eyes at me and I stick my tongue out at her. Yes, we're really mature. "Fine. Where is Chance?" Brooklynn follows my gaze, scanning the crowd.
"He must've been called away. His dad might've come and got him and that's why he went to the office earlier. Remember how Mr. Monroe took him on those research trips last year?" Her words should calm me, but for some reason, they make me feel worse.
"But wouldn't he have told us? I mean, he would've told you, right?" My voice rises just a tad, and I take a deep breath to calm my nerves. I have no idea why I'm suddenly so worked up over this. Right now, nothing else seems to matter. I just need to know that's he's okay.
"Why is Dakota hyperventilating?" Grayson asks, settling down on the other side of Brooklynn. I manage a hateful look, before turning my attention back to the crowd. My view is blocked by another body and I glance up to find Kyle standing there, an apologetic look on his face.
I've ignored him since his little outburst at the cabin, simply because I don't know what to say to him. How to explain to my new boyfriend just how incredibly horrible his words were to me, and how he was right.
Maybe breaking up with Kyle is the best thing I can do, because I don't even know where my heart lies any more. But I can't deal with this at the moment. Chance is my priority.
Which I guess should tell me all I need to know.
I ignore Kyle and turn to Grayson. "Have you heard from Chance?"
"No. I haven't."
"You don't find this strange?" Am I the only one who cares?
"I do find it strange, which is why I've texted him a few times, but I haven't gotten a response. I was going to go check with the office to see if they know what happened to him." Oh, see, that's rational. Good ole rational Grayson. Why didn't I think of that? I came from that direction. I could've stopped by and still made it to class on time.
Just then, Mr. Blooms walks into the auditorium and I'm on my feet. I hear my name called, but I don't turn around. If something happened, Mr. Blooms would know.
"Dakota, how can I help you?" is his way of greeting as I almost race up to him at the front of the room.
