Once they got away from Maryâs house, Paul called Detective Brad Hedstrom and told him he had gone to Maryâs place, looked through the windows, and saw that the place had been trashed. Brad assured Paul that it had not been the EPD who did that. They would get up there as soon as they sent Maryâs truck to the department for processing.
âDid you find anything in Maryâs purse?â Paul asked Brad over the phone.
âNegative. Itâs my guess that she was coming to visit you when someone nabbed her.â
âYou mean the men in the van who tried to kill me,â Paul reminded the detective.
âExactly. You didnât see her in the van, right?â
âIt was dark. All I saw was flashes coming from the front passenger seat and through the sliding door.â But he guessed Mary could have been in there. Which chilled him now, thinking he could have hit Mary with one of his shots. âWhen they kidnapped me, they used an incapacitating agent of some type. So they could have injected Mary long before I showed up at my house. She could have been passed out in the back of the van.â
Paul drove through downtown Eugene and turned to the west toward the Delta Ponds area where Flora lived.
âYou wouldnât happen to know anything about Maryâs next of kin,â Brad said.
âNo. We didnât get into that,â Paul lied. âShe did mention something about her mother working at a California vineyard, though.â There had to be a thousand vineyards in California, so that would keep them busy. But they also had to have Maryâs cell records by now, so they could narrow down their search from Maryâs contact list.
The two of them agreed to keep each other in the loop, but Paul knew that would probably be a one-way exchange. He would feed the detective only marginally important information, and Brad Hedstrom would give Paul diddly squat. They hung up about the time Paul passed the Valley River Center, a major mall in the Eugene area.
âAre we going back to my place?â Flora asked.
âYeah. I have some computer work for you.â
When they got back to Floraâs apartment, Paul put her to work finding the location of Maryâs father and mother. She found the mother in about five minutes, staying at an old farmhouse in the Sonoma Valley. While she worked on finding Maryâs father in Costa Rica, he got onto a couple of social media sites on Floraâs iPad. First he went through every photo on Maryâs pages. Then he shifted to Daliaâs profile images, combing her photos as well. He found a number of images of Dalia with her brother in the Army. But not one photo of her brother from Phoenix. That was strange.
Paul pulled out the old image of Dalia with the younger man and saw that there was no way he had grown into the soldier. So, the only image he had of Daliaâs second brother was the one heâd taken from Maryâs house.
Now he was pissed off at himself for taking certain things for granted.
