Chapter Fifteen
We spent the late afternoon walking around the streets of Chincoteague, admiring the tourist shops and pointing out our favorite houses. So many of them declared their presence with bright paint and cute yard decorations. A corral next to a fast food restaurant contained a couple of ponies that we were able to pet, and an information plaque boasted the equines’ direct descendancy from Spanish mustangs washed ashore hundreds of years ago.
Through the whole experience, Denisha chattered excitedly and pointed out her favorite things with Cami right by her side. Maya admired the various motorcycles that passed us, while Wynn seemed to enjoy shopping for trinkets to keep as memorabilia. I watched the women, each of whom I found myself fond of, opening up and blooming into their true, happy selves as the day spanned. We ate at an outdoor burger joint, appreciating the sounds and smells of the almost fair-like atmosphere of the town.
“I bet it’s super boring and bland here when tourist season is over,” Maya remarked as she watched vehicles pass.
“Colorado!” Cami cried out, pointing at a blue SUV’s license plates.
“New York,” Denisha responded, indicating a black car that moved in the opposite direction down the street.
“Too bad we don’t have those Bingo sheets that use state license plates for the squares.” I smiled at Wynn who nodded in agreement.
After dinner, we made our way back and spent the rest of the evening at the cottage. Dove, stub tail wagging, ate up the attention while she remained off duty. At some point, every one of us ended up lavishing affection on the white canine, while we talked about our favorite parts of the day.
“What do you all want to do tomorrow morning?” I asked, running my fingers over Denisha’s short curls as she flipped through a new coloring book Wynn bought her.
Maya sat on the floor nearby, chin resting on her knees as she chewed on a stick of bubble gum. “I wouldn’t mind going to the beach early. See if we can find some neat shells before the crowds get there and fuck everything up.”
Wynn shifted and lay her head against the armrest of the couch as she yawned. “Yeah, less crowds would be nice. Though it wasn’t too horrible today, because I had all of you.”
“That’s two votes for the beach.” I glanced at Camilla and Denisha. “What about you girls?”
“I don’t care as long as I get ice cream,” my Little said.
Camilla’s shoulders rolled in a gentle shrug. “As long as I’m with you, Ma’am…”
Maya stretched and stood. “Listen, I’m beat and hitting the sack.”
A chorus of agreement ran around the room as each of us admitted our own exhaustion, and we began to head to our respective beds. Maya planned to bunk with Wynn and Dove in the living room on the pull-out couch/bed. I’d offered Wynn the master bedroom to keep her more comfortable, but she declined, stating firmer surfaces made life easier. Denisha and Camilla shared one of the downstairs bedrooms.
