Chapter Twelve

Stockholm, Sweden

Even though Eden had been awake for well over eighteen hours, when the plane landed in Stockholm, she was wide awake and as energetic as she’d ever been in her life. Jet lag be damned! For a poor girl growing up in the squalid, impoverished, litter-strewn and graffiti-mutilated inner-city, to suddenly be in the spotlessly clean capitol of Sweden, with a gorgeous billionaire at her side, was a dizzying reality.

They had to wait for Eden’s luggage to arrive at baggage claim. Peter hadn’t needed to pack any bags for the trip. His Stockholm apartment, like all his apartments around the world, was fully stocked with a wardrobe suitable to the climate and culture. Eden was pleased when, chivalrously, Peter plucked her suitcase from the conveyer belt for her.

“There’s a car waiting for us,” he explained, his hand at the small of her back as he ushered her through the sparkling, crowded airport.

“Of course there is,” Eden replied, smiling, utterly and thoroughly awe-struck at the splendour of his lifestyle.

It was an enormous white Citroen limousine, with a passenger compartment about the same size as the bedroom Eden had grown up in. When the car was cruising away from the airport, Peter extracted his golden telephone from the breast pocket of his suit coat, touched a speed-dial number, and a moment later said into the phone, “Inga, it’s Peter. Put Kirsten on the line.” He put his hand over the phone, turned to Eden, and explained, “Inga can’t speak more than fifty words of English.”

Eden’s breath caught in her throat. Peter was talking to his Swedish mistresses. The urge to leap out of the limousine at the first possible moment, to escape while there was still the chance, became an almost overwhelming urge. She squeezed her eyes tightly shut, waiting for the desire to escape to pass.

Into the telephone, Peter said, “Kirsten, we’ll be there in twenty minutes.” There was a pause, and then, “Yes, I’ve got someone with me…I’d like you to dress casual…No, not quite that casual. I think perhaps it would be nice if we could all go somewhere for a bite to eat then perhaps to a nightclub for some dancing.” He patted Eden’s knee, giving her a smile. “There’s someone special I want you to meet. I’m sure you’ll like her…Yes, I’ll see you soon.” He ended the connection. To Eden he said, “You’re sure you’re not too tired to be out-and-abouting for a while?”

Eden shook her head then looked out the side window, hardly seeing Stockholm passing by. She had agreed to go with Peter, but now that she was literally thousands of miles from anything she remotely considered home, she wasn’t at all certain she hadn’t made the biggest mistake of her life.
