Chapter 34

Zita walked down the stairs in an elegant light blue ball gown. Her heart fluttered in anticipation of the largest party she’d ever seen at the castle. Astronomers stated the triple solar eclipse occurs once every hundred years, and the king planned a celebration at the castle before leaving for the volcano the next day. The musicians, fiddles, drums, flutes and tambourines played as she descended.

Local dignitaries crowded the floor wanting to schmooze with the king. She made nice with the old men and women as she strolled through the bright candlelit chamber, the hundred-candle crystal chandeliers polished to perfection.

Zita found Kestrel in the corner chatting with three older warrior wizards. “Kestrel you look nice this evening.” She curtsied as he bowed. Her body tingled with anticipation. What would Kestrel think when he saw Lily? The cream Zita created would turn her into a hideous monster.

“Did you make nicey-nice with the king yesterday?” Zita spoke in a flirting voice to her former boyfriend.

Kestrel expanded his chest. “The king told me to be proud of the conquest of the resistance wizards.” He beamed at his buddies. “The king will promote me to general tonight, making me the youngest general in the kingdom.” He pointed to a medal on his gold tunic. “For bravery and service to the king.”

Zita opened her mouth to say she lead Kestrel to the resistance hideout. But instead said, “You’re so intelligent and powerful and will make a great general.” Where’s Lily? I can't wait to watch the expression on Kestrel’s face when he discovers the transformation. She peered around the room imagining the girl’s entrance.

Many young guests twirled on the ballroom floor in an intricate dance that Zita had never mastered. She delighted in a younger crowd at the party instead of traditional castle parties where old widowers harassed her to become their bride.

The music finished and a trumpet sounded. The official announcer boomed. “With extreme pleasure, the King Haskell announces his honored guests.”

Zita watched as the local dignitaries and surrounding kingdom’s royalty were introduced.

A woman with shoulder-length black hair, wearing a full-length navy dress appeared at the entrance, escorted by a tall, gray-haired man with a trimmed beard.

“Presenting King Estevan and Queen Valeria of the province of Acadia.”

Ha, Kestrel’s parents. Won’t they be surprised when Kestrel introduces ugly, pockmarked Lily to them as his girlfriend?

Zita zoned out the announcements as she thought of Kestrel’s reaction.

When it became time for the king’s introduction, Zita quit daydreaming and listened in rapt attention. The girl had to be coming next. Will she even show at all? Too embarrassed and maybe won’t make an appearance at the celebration? Oh my, won’t that be a shame?

The king walked into the chamber. Standing beside him with a hand over the king’s arm, Lily was dressed in a flowing gown of white satin and lace.

“The king presents special escort, the lady Lily Goodwin, princess of Thyattica province.”

The king patted the girl’s arm and strolled into the room. Zita focused her attention on Kestrel to revel in his expression when he noticed the young woman's ugliness.
