Owen called Jaimie Spencer in tech relay the news from Mila: they were looking in an area of Wyoming called the Wind River Basin.

Jaimie had responded, “That’s a lot better. I’m almost done with the code. I’ll run the search soon.”

Owen’s second line of forensic attack, christened Humans Gonna Human or when he was in a crabby mood, Humans Can Be Suckers, was a far less methodical approach than Zero In. It involved opportunistically chasing official documents filed with the government to a living, breathing human. The records could include wages, income tax, mortgages or financial debt. He would build out a spiderweb structure with Maxfield Clafoutis’ Lower East Side apartment as the kickoff point with the goal to narrow the search to individuals that may be related, even tangentially, to the crime. Then sucker the human into revealing important details.

He made himself a coffee and sat down at the dining table.

To determine the owner of a particular apartment in New York took a few relatively simple steps. First, he pulled up the Geographic Online Address Translator, the website portal of the New York's Department of City Planning's Information Technology Division and entered the street address. It returned a six-digit tax block and lot, or parcel identifier. He plugged that number into the ACRIS website of the New York City's Department of Finance, Office of the City Register's online portal. It fed him the records related to ownership going back to 1987. These records included detailed deeds, mortgage and mortgage-related banking documents. Variations of the lot and block identifier system was used across the United States in cities and densely populated suburbs.

Scanning the results, he narrowed in on the years Clafoutis could have purchased the listing. The fifth returned document was titled, 12/12/2010 through 06/08/2020, Document type: Deed, Party: Errvan Holding.

Errvan Holding. Interesting. Like most rich people, Clafoutis’ property had been owned by a holding company.

But Owen needed an individual. A human to sucker.

His fingers fanned out over keyboard.

Twenty minutes later, he sat back in his chair and stared at the screen. He had not been able to identify any individual related to Errvan Holding because it was itself held by a trust named NorthEasterly. He was looking at the well-designed structure of a shell company inside a trust. A lockbox within a safe.

Clafoutis had gone to great lengths to keep his private life hidden. Owen rubbed his palms and clapped. Clafoutis’ representative a had gone to great lengths to remain anonymous. I’m coming for you, my sucka.

Two hours later, he sat back again. He had uncovered the entity that had set up NorthEasterly trust. It was a registered agent named Blue Sky. It’s mailing address and telephone were #321 Route 25, Laramie, Wyoming. Tel: 307 232 4590.

Wyoming.

Owen grinned. Both campaigns were homing in on Wyoming. Enough document searching. It was time to reach out and tickle a sucker.
