TODAY . . .

JENNA

I make it back to calculus class with two minutes to spare and find Mr. Williams on the classroom phone.

He looks relieved as I stroll through the door. “Of course she’s here, Mrs. Isaacs. I’ll send her right down.”

Williams hangs up the phone and turns to me, trying his best to look stern. “I seem to remember telling you to make it quick. Did you get lost on your way to the bathroom?”

“You said to be back before the bell rang,” I remind him. “So, I’m actually early.”

He cracks a smile and shakes his head at me. “Grab your stuff and get down there. Directly down there. Mrs. Isaacs doesn’t sound like she’s in a playful mood today.”

In my experience, Mrs. Isaacs is never in a playful mood, so I don’t start to worry until I walk through the office doors and catch sight of Miss Singh. She looks up from her desk and greets me with a tight smile and a warning shake of her head.

“Mrs. Isaacs would like you to fill out a form today,” she says pointedly.

I stop short and take a good look around the office. It’s way too quiet in here. The VPs are usually buzzing around, sipping coffee and plotting how to make our lives miserable. Today, everyone’s holed up in their offices behind closed doors. Even the other secretaries have their heads down. I bite my lip. This doesn’t feel like a routine check-in. So much for all Drew and Mouse’s assurances that everything will be fine.

“Cell phone?” Miss Singh asks, tapping a laminated copy of the Edgewood High School Responsible Use of Technology policy, which has mysteriously appeared at the corner of her desk. She has got to be kidding me. No one pays attention to Edgewood’s rules about technology. Especially me. I shoot her a look that tells her just how weird I think she’s being and am rewarded with the tiniest of smiles and a quiet chuckle. Thank God. I was beginning to feel like I’d slipped into an alternate universe.

I retreat to a far corner of the waiting area, tossing the Office Referral form in the recycling bin as I go.

Miss Singh watches as I pull out my cell phone and fire a quick text to Mouse and Drew.

Just got called to the office.

I run my fingers over the phone and will one of them to reply. It’s not even nine thirty yet, and I’m the only one of us down here, so it’s still possible that this meeting isn’t about Miss Bailey at all.

My thoughts are interrupted by Miss Singh clearing her throat loudly, and I slide my phone into the waistband of my jeans just before Isaacs appears in front of me.

“Good morning, Jenna. Come on back.”

I follow her to her office, thinking about how long it’s been since I’ve been in here. Isaacs took me seriously when I cut off our check-ins four weeks ago. I look around her office and bite back a smile.
