ELEVEN
Distant sirens wailed toward the building, but Ella was sure they wouldn’t make it in time. She leaned farther out the window, Roman’s harsh breath near her ear, his arms around her middle.
Below, the grass was white with last night’s snow, onlookers gathering across the street, watching in frozen horror. Where was Hunter? He would have been in the back. No sign of him, not that he could do much to help anyway. And what about Luke? He should have heard the explosion and come running.
“We might have to jump,” she said, knowing it could be a death sentence. Or they could get away with a few broken bones or just some minor scrapes. They might be forced to take the chance.
“We wait until the last possible second.” Roman’s voice was hoarse, painful coughs punctuating each word.
Smoke enveloped them, pluming out the window. Ella dragged in a breath, coughing so hard her stomach hurt, tears streaking down her face. She tried to look back, gauge how close the fire was. Roman held her fast.
She squeezed her eyes shut against the stinging smoke. And she prayed.
“Don’t cry,” Roman whispered. “Help’s coming.”
She wiped her cheeks, moisture and soot coming away on her hands.
“Roman, I—” What? Have loved you since forever? Wish we could have another chance? Don’t want to die?
“Look!” Roman yelled over her head.
Ella’s attention swiveled to the yard below. Luke and Hunter were racing down the sidewalk, a huge ladder balanced on their shoulders. Despite their expert maneuvering along the snowy yard, Ella thought they’d never make it in time.
But then the onlookers moved into action. A man with a red hat ran to the ladder and took up the middle, and soon others followed, the ladder racing toward the building.
Bracing herself in the windowsill, Ella turned her neck, heat radiating behind her. Roman blocked her view. “Don’t look back,” he said. “We’re almost out of here.”
She knew he was protecting her, trying to keep her calm. Her biggest fear wasn’t for her own life but for his. He’d die protecting her, she knew he would.
As Luke and Hunter led the strangers below to the building and the ladder cranked up just short of the window, she prayed like she hadn’t prayed in years.
“Now!” Roman urged, helping turn her body so she could drop over the ledge. She clutched the windowsill, her feet searching for the rung of the ladder. Her chest hurt, her limbs heavy and slow. She felt a hand at her ankle.
“I’m right here!” Luke called, guiding her foot to the first rung and making sure she was securely positioned.
Quickly, they both started their descent, but Roman didn’t follow. Above the ladder, he straddled the windowsill, flames fanning around him. He was waiting for her to get to safety. Black smoke filled the air, making it hard to see him as the ladder rattled under Luke and Ella’s hurried descent. When her feet finally hit the ground, a numb shock set in.
Around her, everything seemed to move in slow motion at an echoing distance.
