Chapter 8

Nora raced down the halls, hoping to find the source of the whistling, but in seconds, it had vanished, leaving her to wonder if she had perhaps imagined it.

“Nora!”

She nearly bumped into a girl and put her hands up.

“Lani?” Nora smiled at her friend from the party. “How are you?”

“I’m ok, I guess. Considering…” Lani shrugged. “I want to say I’m sorry for leaving you that night. I shouldn’t have.”

Touched, Nora said, “Well, that was my choice, not yours. You’re really sweet to say that, though.”

“I heard about … about how you heard the murderer?” Lani said. “Is it true?”

“It is. I mean… it had to be the murderer right? It was bizarre. Man, poor Dana. You knew her all your life, didn’t you?”

“Neighbors since I was a toddler,” Lani said. “It’s terrible. She was… she was nice.”

“I can’t think of a person who didn’t love her,” Nora said. “I guess the popular opinion is that someone wanted Duke dead, and Dana was just in the way.”

Lani shuddered. “Does it matter? What matters is… life’s short. One minute you’re partying, next minute you’re run over by a train.”

“Yeah.”

“Well, in any case, poor Noah,” Lani continued. “Dana would tease him all the time but, beneath that, she was his older sister, you know? She loved him. She’d protect him from anyone who bullied him.”

“I never had a sister,” Nora said. Which was a lie. Until recent events had changed things, Nora would willingly have told anyone that Raquel was her sister. “But I can imagine how sad Noah feels. Are you planning to see him sometime?”

“I was headed over to his place right now,” Lani said. “The twins are coming too.”

“Can I come?”

“Sure. I’ll give you a ride.”

Dana and Noah’s house was a small, A-frame cottage tucked down Maple street, with a large grassy yard sloping in front of it. It was just the same as any other house on the block except that, right now, it was surrounded by cars. Nora thought she recognized Detective Holt’s car, too.

“I guess other people have shown up to offer condolences,” Lani said.

She slowed down her car as Nora gasped.

“Lani, the roof! Noah’s on the roof!”

The car screeched to a halt and they both ran out, waving their hands to catch Noah’s attention.

He looked at them, his face expressionless, then put a finger to his lips.

Nora felt a bolt of fear go through her. Was he planning to kill himself? Had the death of his sister made him so depressed? To her surprise, Lani only laughed.

“Get back in the car,” she said to Nora.

“Lani, we have to help him. Talk to him while I go inside and see who’s here that can help.”

“I know Noah,” Lani said. “He’s… well, you’ll see.”

Noah was now clambering down the roof, swinging from one ledge to another until he finally came to a pipe that he slid down. In moments, he was by their side and motioning them into the car.

“Let’s get out of here before my parents see me.
