“Good job, Sherlock,” Ronen said with a cynical grin on his face.
Gadi’s face was grave. Where had Ronen got hold of an explosive charge? Had he improvised something, had he managed to smuggle in the materials, or perhaps bought them in Beirut? In any case, why wasn’t he already on his way out of the country? Or had he caught him just as he had been about to leave?
Gadi went to the wardrobe and saw Ronen’s clothes hanging there. No, he hadn’t been planning a quick getaway.
“So it’s a delayed-reaction charge,” Gadi said, thinking aloud. Ronen watched as Gadi continued searching, his attitude one of interest mixed with scorn.
“You’re getting warmer, but you’re still a long way off I’m afraid, my dear Watson. I see I was wrong calling you Sherlock.”
Gadi was figuring it out, the pieces were fitting together. Ronen was too relaxed, he had time, so it couldn’t be a delayed-reaction charge. It must be one he could detonate from a distance! But why had he switched hotels, and to the Sheraton of all places? Ronen was not the type of person to want to commit suicide in luxurious surroundings…it must be taking place right there!
“Abu-Khaled is due here, and you’re going to get rid of him using a remote-control.” The smile vanished from Ronen’s face.
Gadi walked to the window, which overlooked the entrance to the hotel, and parted the curtains. A number of Mercedes were on their way down to the underground car park.
“They’re starting to arrive,” he said as he turned around, letting the curtain fall back into place. He held out his hand, his face grave. “Give me the remote-control.”
Ronen tried to smile. “Of course, sir. That’s exactly what I came here to do.”
“Ronen, this is no time for games,” Gadi said in a tough voice.
“Are you uptight, commander? Maybe we should play hot-and-cold. Start with the acoustic ceiling, maybe I hid it up there?”
“Ronen!” Gadi cried with impatience.
“No? Okay. So what will you give me instead?” he said with a childish smile.
“Ronen,” Gadi said, a warning in his voice.
“You’ve completely lost your sense of humour. Maybe you’d like to torture me? After all, that’s the only way you’re going to get out of me where the remote-control is hidden.”
Gadi went to the window again. The tail of another Mercedes was just disappearing into the underground car park. He turned, slowly, picked up his glass of whisky and drank it down in one gulp. Without a word he handed the glass to Ronen, who took it with a smile.
Gadi had made his decision before handing the glass to Ronen: Ronen refused to give the remote-control to him of his own volition, and a struggle could end in one of them accidentally blowing up the car, either empty or full of people. He would have to put Ronen out of commission if he wanted to locate the remote-control, which was undoubtedly hidden here in the room, and he would have to do it without making any unnecessary noise.
