No Good Choices. Thursday, December 15th 1042hrs

For a brief moment, I feared that Mortianna and her sisters had come back for round two. Then reason started to assert itself, and I realized that couldn’t be the case. For starters, they wouldn’t have bothered announcing themselves. More likely, they would have just remained outside and ambushed me when I stepped through the doorway. But if not them, who?

There was only one way to find out, and I nodded my thanks to Viola, noting her hard expression as I turned and made my way back down the hall, passing through the spotless reception area and out the front door.

Five women stood outside, gathered around a dark Cadillac parked along the curb. From a distance, they were dressed in what can only be described as pilgrim chic, or maybe Plymouth couture, if that term was better suited. Their outfits were colorless, consisting of mixtures of black and white blouses with matching slacks, buckle shoes and wide-brimmed hats. They wore modern day capes draped over their forms, or else collared jackets adorned with needlepoint stitching.

The first of the women to notice me was on the younger side. Late teens, or maybe early twenties, with dark hair shaved close along the sides and left long on top. She had a stud ring in her nose, and too much mascara on. She pointed me out to the others, then turned and made her way over to the front of the car, peering down the street. At the same time, a second girl took up position at the opposite end of the vehicle, the pair of them peering around for unseen dangers. I couldn’t tell for certain if either was armed, and some warning inside told me that I’d probably be happier not knowing.

While I was still considering what this all meant, a woman removed her hat and handed it to one of the others before she turned and stepped forward. She was in her early fifties, with curly brown hair interspersed with gray extending down to the small of her back and soft green eyes that seemed to catch the light regardless of the sun’s position. Beneath her black jacket she wore a white satin blouse with a large bow along the neckline and shoes that clicked against the pavement as she drew to a halt in front of me.

“Good morning, Sergeant Mayfield,” she said.

“Do I know you?”

“No,” she said. “But I’ve been looking forward to speaking to you. My name is Ambretta Greenhall, high priestess and leader of the Sisters of Salem coven.”

“Oh, great,” I said. “More witches. Just what I needed.”

Ambretta’s mouth split apart into a tight-lipped smile. “I understand why you might feel reluctant to speak with me, but I mean you no harm. In fact, I’m hopeful that I might assist you. I understand you recently had trouble with three former members of our coven.”

“If by trouble you mean being attacked and nearly set on fire, then yeah, sure, let’s call it that.
